Forecasters say Ivan to flood Florida, New Orleans
11:31 2004-09-15
Forecasters said Ivan could hit land anywhere from the western Florida
Panhandle to the southeastern Louisiana coast as a major hurricane
early Thursday.
In New Orleans, Mayor Ray Nagin said there was a 22 percent chance his
city would take a direct hit from Ivan. Since most of the city lies
below sea level, surrounded by levees along the Mississippi River, the
result would be a catastrophe, he said.
"If we get a storm like Ivan to hit us directly or to become really
close to us, then we could have a situation where we have 12 to 18
feet of water throughout the city," Nagin said, informs CNN.
According to the Tampa Tribune though the storm may weaken to a
Category 3 as it hits land, many of Pensacola Beach's 3,000 year-round
residents scrammed, even as waves from the Gulf of Mexico appeared
benign Tuesday. Others dug in.
With Ivan drifting west toward Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana,
Florida emergency officials warned Panhandle residents not to relax.
"This is a very large storm, and we can expect significant impacts of
hurricane-force winds, floods and tornadoes well away from that center
of circulation," said Craig Fugate, director of the state Division of
Emergency Management.
Tropical-storm-force winds will stretch 260 miles from Ivan's eye,
state meteorologist Ben Nelson said. That means Florida's Panhandle,
from Pensacola to Fort Walton Beach, Destin and Panama City are almost
certainly in for a bad beating.
Hurricane Ivan moved to within 300 miles (480 kilometers) of the mouth
of the Mississippi River as residents of Florida, Mississippi, Alabama
and Louisiana were ordered to evacuate coastal regions.
Ivan, bringing winds nearing 140 miles per hour, has its center about
295 miles south-southeast of the Mississippi River, the National
Hurricane Center said on its Web site. It is moving north-northwest at
about 12 miles per hour and may reach land between Louisiana and
Florida today.
"Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to
completion throughout the entire warning area," the Hurricane Centre
said in its statement.
The storm is a Category 4 on the five-tier Saffir-Simpson scale,
capable of generating waves 12 feet higher than normal and blowing
roofs from homes. Crude oil rose for a third day as producers in the
Gulf of Mexico such as Royal Dutch Shell Group evacuated platforms,
reports Bloomberg.

Amusing that you're getting news from Russia on a storm heading for the US. :-)

The recent Discussion on Ivan indicates that 50 foot waves are being generated
offshore. See http://www.weatherunderground.com/tropical/at200409.disc.html for
the latest discussion. (You can also get it from the NOAA, but they're still

ONE weather buoy in the gulf recorded ONE wave at 49 feet.
It could have been accurate, likely a fluke,
or it could have been an error.

Title: Re: Ivan to flood Florida, New Orleans.......But has Bush beaten 15 Sep 2004 09:06:21 PM
In the creating more jobs department. You know, the kind of jobs
actually worth having like those in construction, electricians,
plumbers, telephone and cable servicemen. Window installers, Tree
surgeons, Insurance agents.....etc.
The lumber companies have been working overtime and they can't get the
trucks here fast enough with all the demand for bottled water, plywood
and such.
Many Electric companies have come from other parts of the US to help out
and most of the county workers have been working overtime around the
clock .......HEY! WAIT A MINUTE! Bush screwed you in the overtime
department! You may not be getting paid for all your extra effort. let
me know how that works out, okay? Nobody seemed to really know just HOW
that would effect things.
Oh yeah..... Death, Destruction and the Deficit.
Bush of course wins that one hands down.
Thankfully we won't have to deal with Ivan for 4 years like we have had
to with Bush.

away out of their mothers arms into the waters in the pitch black
darkness of night.
They didn't have a chance.

Su Zanadu, you live in Florida right? I have always wondered why people
there contruct and build their houses mainly of wood and not solid
concrete?
Don't you think it is wise when you live in such a "hurricane alley" to
construct houses of concrete with steel skeletons? Don't you think that
building your house otherwise might lead to much less damage by
hurricanes?
Same thing for powerlines. Whenever I see pictures on TV of Florida
I see powerlines. Why don't you bury them in the ground?
Would't it be a good idea if people from Florida started to build other
types of houses and bury powerlines?
Kind Regards,
Barbarossa

I think people live in what they can afford, just like anywhere else in
the world.

such a "hurricane alley" to construct
houses of concrete with steel skeletons?

If I were to have a house custom-built, yes, I surely would!
Mine is a block home and I don't worry about it too much except for the
roof and the windows. My husband and I are going to invest in some type
of storm shutters for the windows sometime in the near future.
They do plenty of stupid things when building homes that I have never
understood, like putting the plumbling inside a concrete slab with the
home on top of the slab. When you have a leak, they must tear up the
concrete until they can locate the leak.
My house thankfully is not like that but off the ground a few feet.
I have a friend who had a slab leak and they reran the plumbing thru her
attic. That's not good either.

Same thing for powerlines. Whenever I
see pictures on TV of Florida I see
powerlines. Why don't you bury them in
the ground?

They do now. As they replace them they are now underground.
The utilities in my neighborhood are underground and it was developed in
1979.
You still will have power outtages with underground utilities because
when whole trees are uprooted, the roots tend to break or pull up the
lines.

Would't it be a good idea if people from
Florida started to build other types of
houses and bury powerlines?

Wouldn't it?
Wouldn't life be grand if we had everything we wanted and all the money
we needed? :)

Kind Regards,
Barbarossa

Yes, but with hurricane related decapitations at a minimum, still safer
than Iraq!
Have you seen the latest storm to threaten the US, "Jeanne" (pronounced

Yeah, Jeanne is currently a tropical storm which MAY be blowing toward
Florida.
Forecasters say it's full of unusually HOT air. LOL...
I heard that in BLUNT County, Fla., a tornado spawned by Ivan did some
damage.

Well......It was at hairycane strength when it blew thru the Dominican
Republic and is just below that strenghth now.

*lol*
It will most likely PETER out.

I heard that in BLOUNT County, Ala., a
tornado spawned by Ivan did some

Yep! That's what I heard too! ;)
Ivan was one bad dude! I was just looking at the bridge sections in
Panama City and Alabama that were wiped out and all that sand where it
shouldn't ought to be!
Cars are burried in it and it is 12 inches
deep inside people's houses.
I hope the voting machines didn't suffer! :-O
We aren't sweating Jeanne, nope! She's a pink little girlie storm!

Sorry to hear of such things.
Very unusual occurrences like 3 big ones in row, you would wonder
about Greenhouse or some change in patterns.
I hear Mobile is also wet, it is as dry as stick here.

It's a big storm indeed ! Heavy rain in Mobile (Alabama looks like
taking
a direct hit going by the weather forecasts for the area) & four
states
affected -- Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama & Florida....
& Hurricane Jeanne is also on the way -- too early to say where it
will hit exactly yet....
