Object: FREAKY LIGHTNING!! (Scared me good)
We are having some pretty severe thunderstorms coming thru Florida
tonight and blinding flashes of lightning...
The kids are in bed and I was sitting downstairs in the den when
lightning hit something near my son's bedroom upstairs. I heard the pop
and saw the flash outside from the window and I ran upstairs and opened
his door to check on him. He was fine, eyes as big as saucers though
(OO) and inside his closet was a voice constantly saying over and over
like a broken record "I love you mommy"-"I love you mommy"-"I love you
mommy".
WTF?
It turned out to be a little teddybear that he has had for years and is
too big for now, that was in a box in his closet and I guess the
lightning set it off.
I had to pull the battery out of it because it wouldn't stop! Normally
you have to either press a contact in his paws to get him to say one
phrase.
FREAKYYYYY!!
I popped my head outside for a half a second and I don't see any smoke
or flames. I'll keep checking but it is too scary to go outside for a
thorough investigation.
I'll check for intruders ANYTIME but I am a chicken when it comes to
putting one toe out the door in an electrical storm.

If caught in the open during lightning storm, minimize
your profile, ie squat down, and minimize your body
surface which touches the ground, ie get on finger
tips and tip-toes (seriously). Better yet, get
inside a hollow conductor, like an automobile.

You won't catch me in the open during an electrical storm!
And also, most of my bad experiences have occured while inside the home
so you will want to add:
Stay away from windows and electrical outlets, light switches...etc.
Do not touch or operate electrical appliances.
Do not take a shower or bath.
Do not touch the stainless steel sink, faucet or other metalic objects.
(bzzzt-ouch!)
Do not use a corded telephone.....if anyone even has one of those
anymore. (zap!)
Do night hang out the window and fly a kite with a key tied on the tail
unless the other end of the string is hooked up to Frankenstein.
And last but not least!
Log off and unplug everything unless you are protected from surges.

What I've learned from experience is that not going outside isn't a guarantee
that you won't get struck by lightning. :-P

And that's why I'm terrified of lightning.

I have a real good, healthy respect for it.

Freaky! My heart would've been in my throat at that point.

FREAKYYYYY!!

No doubt. Were you alone? Or was your husband there? I would not
want to be alone during that!

Susan, I don't know what it is - but I don't even like plugging things
into wall sockets or changing light bulbs.. never mind lightning. It
is one of my biggest phobias. The thought of ever being shocked fills
me with utter dread. I tell people that I swear I must have been
electrocuted in a past life.
When I was married I had my husband change light-bulbs and plug things
in (that's how bad it is for me) - now I'm forced to do it myself and
I can't stand it - but I have no choice but to do it now.
I would *not* want to have been you the other night! But thank God
everything turned out okay.

No, he was away. I am used to having the storms here but it really is
unnerving. I just can't relax until they are over.

Oh, I've done that one myself, when I was 16. My boyfriend had left his
guitar and amplifier in my garage and I was told "not to touch
it"......lol! Which of course made me pick it up and turn it on. I was
messing around playing it and flipping switches on the amp and there was
a switch ALL BY ITSELF on the back of the amp! Here I am standing on
concrete barefooted, hands on the metal strings and I flip the switch.
Electrical current went completely thru my body and I dropped my
boyfriend's prized Fender. Hey.....so that's what that ground switch
does! But *why* does it do that? I never did tell him what happened.
I have when I was a kid, on more than one occasion stuck my finger in a
lamp socket while it was on. OUCH! It sort of bites you.
Electricity is something! Isn't it? Even static packs a punch. I'm
always shocking myself when I open a door.
When the kids jump on the trampoline in our backyard, they sometimes
generate so much static electricity that their hair is standing straight
up while they are jumping and then they chase each other around and
shock each other.

When I was married I had my husband
change light-bulbs and plug things in
(that's how bad it is for me) - now I'm

They now make a mini fluorescent spiral light bulb that is supposed to
last up to 7 years. I am replacing all of ours with those as they burn
out. As for the 7 years, I'll believe it when I see it.

I would *not* want to have been you the
other night! But thank God everything
turned out okay.

We fared pretty good actually, with only having to reset most of our
clocks because of the power flickering on and off.
The teddybear incident was much amusement at breakfast the next day.
The poor thing is pitiful looking to begin with. Missing nose, matted
fur, you know the type.
They have these really powerful microbursts here that do as much damage
as a tornado can. It's just something you have to deal with if you live
here just like you all have to deal with the cold and snow.

I'll never forget my Mum telling me that the Thunder is nothing to be
afraid of.. the sound is scary.. but it's the lightning that we have
to worry about. The thunder still is startling - but when I see that
lightning bolt in the sky, to this day I hold my breath.

Hehe! You're just like I was.. saying "don't" was always an
invitation to "do" .. :)

I was
messing around playing it and flipping switches on the amp and there was
a switch ALL BY ITSELF on the back of the amp! Here I am standing on
concrete barefooted, hands on the metal strings and I flip the switch.

Ah Gawd! The dread. One of my worst fears. And I've never been
shocked! That's why I say that it is so odd that I have this phobia
and I'm so paranoid over it when I've never even experianced it. And
it's not just an "Oh man, the thought of being shocked really freaks
me out." - it's an actual *fear* of mine.. must sound crazy but
sometimes I think I was electrocuted in a past life. I mean, actually
having chills run down my spine when I have to change a light bulb
can't be normal.

Hey.....so that's what that ground switch
does! But *why* does it do that? I never did tell him what happened.

I wouldn't have either .. :)

I have when I was a kid, on more than one occasion stuck my finger in a
lamp socket while it was on. OUCH! It sort of bites you.

I even feared it as a child.. which is also strange. Kids are curious
by nature - but the outlets are one thing I never messed with.

Electricity is something! Isn't it? Even static packs a punch. I'm
always shocking myself when I open a door.

Yes! My car door.. I always get little shocks from that. I usually
go to my car and open my door real fast.. LOL! It's a sight to see..
my friends think I'm nuts.

When the kids jump on the trampoline in our backyard, they sometimes
generate so much static electricity that their hair is standing straight
up while they are jumping and then they chase each other around and

Awesome if it works.. thanks for letting me know.. that would be a
huge relief for me. You should see me changing light bulbs.. first I
make sure that the light switch is *off* so when I put the light bulb
in it doesn't light up while I'm doing it (lol) .. and I actually hold
my breath and turn away while I'm doing it.. and I have butterflies in
my stomach. My ex husband would always do it for me ..but.. I'll take
changing the light bulbs and falling flat on my ***** on the icey-snowy
drive-way over the way he made me feel anyday.

I would *not* want to have been you the
other night! But thank God everything
turned out okay.

Reminds me of those old horror movies with the stormy night and the
kids' toys coming to life on him.

They have these really powerful microbursts here that do as much damage
as a tornado can. It's just something you have to deal with if you live
here just like you all have to deal with the cold and snow.

Yeah. The cold and snow can be unbearable at times. I am *so* sick
of it. I just fell the other day on the ice in my drive-way and
fractured my tail-bone.. PAIN.. Ugh, the worst pain. I'm seriously
considering moving to a warmer climate. I don't want to go through
this again next year.
