Tornado hits Ontario !!!
Tornado rips through Fergus, Ont.
Friday, August 19, 2005
TORONTO -- At least one tornado ripped apart homes, chewed limbs from
trees and overturned trucks Friday after much of southwestern Ontario
was lashed by punishing winds and heavy rain.
One confirmed tornado left a wake of destruction near Fergus, Ont.,
northwest of Guelph, as cars were tossed into a ditch and roofs were
ripped from homes and barns. Tattered bales of hay, jagged fragments of
wooden fences and severed tree branches lay strewn about.
The severe series of storms that began around 1:30 p.m., just east of
Milverton, Ont., near Stratford, also caused flooding in some areas.
Toronto's afternoon commute was snarled as cars were forced to plow
through highways that in places resembled rivers.
But in all the chaos, no serious injuries were reported.
The storm eventually moved east, prompting tornado warnings throughout
the southern part of the province before hammering Fergus.
"We've got trees down and at least one report of one home being
damaged," said Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
"We have an Environment Canada team driving up through that area to see
if they can corroborate it."
According to witness accounts, it was likely a tornado that caused the
damage, he added.
"Based on what we were seeing on radar at the time, those eyewitness
reports were being corroborated with very strong echoes showing up on
the radar in the Fergus area," he said.
In the aftermath, trucks and vehicles were tossed, trees were knocked
down, and several homes and silos were demolished.
In nearby Guelph and Orangeville, there were reports of trees knocking
down power lines, said Hydro One spokeswoman Kathleen Welsh.
As a result, close to 10,000 Ontario residents were left without
electricity, Welsh said.
"We're not sure what all the damage is yet because we are still
patrolling the lines and assessing the damage," she said.
Coulson couldn't confirm whether the downed power lines were the result
of a tornado or strong winds.
As the storm advanced through the afternoon, Environment Canada issued
a tornado warning for Toronto -- a rarity for Canada's most populous
city -- and its surrounding areas.
"We received a report from a volunteer storm spotter of a tornado in
(northern Toronto)," Coulson said. "But we haven't been able to verify
if there was any damage or if anyone else saw this."
In some parts of the city, the sky was tinged green by sunlight
reflecting off falling hail.
In Brampton, Ont., west of Toronto, skies grew ominously dark as
screeching winds contorted trees and drove sheets of rain sideways.
Up to 100 millimetres of rain was reported to have fallen in Brampton,
Coulson said.
"We've got standing water on the roads three-quarters of the way up on
to hubcaps," he said.
By late afternoon, many of the tornado warnings in southwestern Ontario
were downgraded to severe thunderstorm warnings as the severe weather
moved further east.
However, the storms delayed flights departing from Pearson
International Airport, said Connie Turner of the Greater Toronto
Airports Authority.
There were no indications the province's highways saw any increase in
accidents as a result of the rough weather, said provincial police
spokesman Rob Jolicoeur.
"This is a normal Friday night for accidents for us," Jolicoeur said.
