Yep.. that was a classic.
There is a lot of mystique surrounding the author Lewis Carroll,
and his works of fiction 'Alice in Wonderland', and
'Through the Looking Glass'

"The author's life and work has become a constant area for
speculation and his exploring of the boundaries of sense and
nonsense has inspired a number of psychological studies and

Ludwig Wittgenstein."

Yep...and some evidence exists that Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) was
a hetero pedophile along with persistent rumors he was a druggie, and that
the drug consumption helped fuel his imaginative writing.

Ya know, sociologists have remarked that the 60s seemed to be an
expression of collective anger against the social complacency, conformity,
and repressiveness of the 50s (and earlier) period when authority,
religious, civic, and political, was generally not questioned -- to the
detriment of the individual's personal freedoms and overall emotional well
being (a la Joseph McCarthy).
It was as though Americans had been released from a long term in a prison,
or perhaps a seminary or military academy, and were kicking up their heels
in celebration of their right to pursue happiness in any manner, as long
as it respected the rights of others.
That, in essence, is what the 60s era meant to me ! So, I agree that some
of it looks silly now, and mistakes were made, and drugs became a social
problem, etc., but I will alway maintain that it's far better to be what
you want to be, than it is to be what others want you to be!

I think it had something to do with the rampant hypocrisy that was
pervasive throughout society. People weren't any different than we are
now, we just aren't hiding our behaviors anymore. (Oh, and women aren't

The hypocrisy really was a part of the conformity they practiced. One face
wanted to satisfy the societal 'norm', in order to facilitate daily
interactions, but the other was hidden and wanted something quite
'unacceptable.' That hidden face then came out of the closet in the 60s! I
think inherently humans want to express themselves in the manner they feel
most reflects their true interests and desires.
The civil rights movement helped bring America to a new realization of the
rights of individuals to 'be themselves' and be regarded as equals in
every sense despite the constrictive social box the 'norm' or 'status quo'
had largely pushed them into.
The women's rights movement became assertive during that period, too, as
did gay/lesbian advocacy groups.
The social environment of the 50s became boringly repressive and quietly
stressful -- and ultimately a big everyday lie. It was a 'social volcano'
getting ready to erupt into more truth, reality, experimentation,
variety...
Many of the neocons and evangelicals today have made it clear that they'd
like to bring us back to those times, but it's unlikely to occur without
vehement social resistance (and probably violence if their tactics begin
to repress).
I think the movie, "Pleasantville", accurately reflected at least part of
50s America.
I experienced America changing a lot, from segregation to integration,
from women being mothers, wives, and housekeepers to working professionals
and blue collar workers.
I will never regret growing up during that unique era in history, despite
its terrible stresses on the individual and society in general. Looking
back, and comparing it to the period we're now in, I lament living in our
times in many ways. I don't see nearly as much resistance to authority or
the status quo, and it appears we're slipping backward to Pleasantville.

Damn straight!
You have *no idea* how happy I am that I was born in a day and age
that women are no longer "in the kitchen" being brood mares. NOT to
say that it is not an absolutely admirable job (actually, I've heard,
and seen first hand by watching my mum that it's the HARDSEST job!).
But I can't help but to wonder how many brilliant minds were wasted
scrubbing floors, knitting and cooking souffles?
How many brilliant doctors; lawyers; psychiatrists - teachers etc..
never got to fulfill their dreams? Never had a chance to make a
difference in the world. And again, I'm not saying that staying home
and raising kids isn't making a difference. It's raising the next
generation and constantly trying to have their kids turn out to be
"all that they can be."
Which leads me to my next point. It's noble to dedicate your life to
making sure others reach their goals; achieve their dreams...but does
one ever stop to realize that while they're trying to make the most of
*someone else's life* - *someone else's dreams* - they're neglecting
their own?
I've heard so many women say that they live vicariously through their
kids. And they're happy (or so they claim), to be doing it. But when
I hear that, immediately I think: "but what about living *your* life?"
Now please (all the house wives out there that may be reading this),
I am not downing you. As I said, yours is an admirable and selfless
job/lifestyle. You're doing what makes you complete. If you are
complete then you shall not want for more. Just do what makes you
happy. Our future is your children. Not to put too much pressure on
you, but if you mess up - we're screwed .. ;)
I do admire your dedication and selflessness.
But it just seems like a bit of a contradiction when I hear mothers
say they want their daughters to be in an Ivy league college; getting
straight A's - studying medicine or Law, and to settle for nothing
less but success in life. I'm glad they have those aspirations for
their children...but it makes me beg the question: "what stopped
*you*? Did you not feel you were JUST as worthy as she to pursue
the same?"
Now if she (the mother) did not have the MEANS to reach for the stars,
then that is a different story.
But too many women feel it's their duty (well, WAY more-so years ago;
that attitude is basically null and void today, thank God) to take
care of a man, a house and kids. She forgets about her own dreams.
And a lot of times that can lead to a subconscious resentment...and
not only for her husband; but unfortunately, resentment towards her
kids, too.
In closing: I feel lucky that I am secure in a career. I do not need
a man for survival. And I never will. Believe me, I WANT the husband
and the house and the kids and the white picked fence and the whole
nine yards. But the man I end up with, I will end up with because I
LOVE him; not because I need him. And God forbid if he passes away or
leaves me high and dry - I won't have to panic the way so many widows
and/or divorcees do: "Oh, what will I do? He was the bread winner; he
was the one who took care of the bills; the mortgage is under his
name; the cars are under his name - and I haven't a single career
skill to fall back on!!!!"
Ladies: Hope for the best concerning your marriage. But PLAN and be
*prepared* for the worst.
Dani

I guess it's more your generation's 'cup of tea' than mine, Perseid. I
agree with Werewolfy on this one -- it's a noisy assault on the senses,
but the printed lyrics (which I accessed via Google) were a fairly
accurate representation of the typical doomie mindset here (or anywhere).
It's odd how reading the lyrics sometimes makes a tune seem rather silly,
while listening to it can make one feel that it is more...uh...profound,
relevant! LOL! I still can't understand what was meant by a mother in the
kitchen patching all the cracks in the wall. What the hell did that mean?
heeheehee...of course, many songs have 'creative license' exercised to the
extreme in conveying the emotional message, often skewing coherence. Music
is really like a drug itself, working on those parts of the mind where

Growing up we are unaware that we live in a jungle with
danger lurking around every vine. Our parents are keeping
us safe through our primary growth years.
I've heard better versions of that song. The one that was hitting
the radio for so long was much clearer, the lyrics much easier to
hear.
Of course, it's all about how we may construct artificial,
psychological defenses to the sensory and psychic assaults
we receive from our environment on a daily basis.. not everybody
does this, but many people do.. some people accept their
environment and take control of it, while others feel they
have to put up defensive mechanisms to what they perceive as
an assult.

dreams reside."
Excuse me in advance for plagiarism. I'm afraid I will have to 'steal'
that sentence, Doc.
I appreciate to the full, well presented original thoughts concisely
expressed. This one is a classic. Poetic in it's way.
Yes, you are a writer...a good one.

*blush* Gee willikers, Wolfy, thanx for the compliment! Movies, fictional
literature, love and sex also work on our mental processes similiarly.

The Defense, by Bad Religion
Nothing comes easier than madness in the world today
Mass paranoia is a mode not a malady
Yeah, I'd like to watch 1,000 cable channels but there's nothing on
And my high speed connection's monitored daily by The Pentagon
These things are seldom what they seem
I'm not inclined to enjoy my dreams
Won't go away
No Peace (no peace), and No Friends (no friends)
We trace the mortal edge (with no defense)
To State the obvious, This world is perilous for us
No sense and No Guide, ain't it beautiful to be alive (yeah, right)
I won't resign before the struggle ends
So I'll construct this sound defense
We are the prey and culture is the predator
I'm running out of time where conditions are positional
Shadows of a doubt cast reluctance and depravity
There's got to be a way to overcome this cruel reality
Is there an option left for me, I'm not immune to despondency
There's no way...
No Peace (no peace), and No Friends (no friends)
We trace the mortal edge (with no defense)
To State the obvious, This world is perilous for us
No sense (no sense) and No Guide (no guide),
ain't it beautiful to be alive (yeah, right)
I won't resign before the struggle ends
So I'll construct this sound defense
There's a signpost on the corner and it keeps
everybody safe
We were all made in the shade
And your mother's in the kitchen, where she's
patching all the cracks in the wall
We never had a care in the world
(No shade) Too much to sacrifice, (No light) it's hard to recongnize
(Just black) traps to compromise (And white) obscuring deadly alabies
(My plans) It's combinational, (designs) the pressure's so intense
So I'll construct this sound defense
(No Way) Nothing's plainer than the madness in the world today
(No sign) I must conceal myself and steal myself and break away
(No grace) I seek initiative in matters that are black and white
(No sense) So I'll construct this sound defense

Thanks Woodsy. I knew there must be some reason to be grateful that I
am no longer a young man. This video tells me why.

Note that Grace Slick could go through several minutes without blinking
her eyes...and there's a chemical explanation for that. LOL!
She struck a memorable, charismatic, sensual presence on stage, and had a
great set of vocal chords and plenty of lung power. I could listen to her
for hours and hours.
She and Jefferson Airplane were a defining musical influence in the flower
power era.
But...now it's the era of the twilight of a civilization that's
unfortunately cooked itself well done with lies, greed, hypocrisy, war-
and fear-mongering, and the exploitation of every goddamned thing it gets
its fuckin' corporate blood-stained fingers on.
Nothin' purple about these widdle fingers here in America...they've been
so thoroughly stained by blood and ***** and urine, no other color can
compete.

Grace Slick. Grew up a society girl, attending the same school/college
as one of Richard Nixon's daughters. She claimed to have tried to
spike punch with LSD at a White House reunion of her classmates.
Imagine Tricia Nixon seeing lights in the West Wing.
That song offers one of the most compelling vocals in R+R history.
Leave the sound up next time. :-)
Grace managed to survive, passed thru rehab a couple of times and was
doing well last I'd heard.
