General Who Likened War on Terror to Battle With Satan Is Retiring |
General who likened war on terror to battle with Satan is retiring
By Agence France-Presse
WASHINGTON - An army general who led the Pentagon's effort to find
Osama bin Laden and once likened the war on terror to a Christian struggle
against Satan is retiring, a Pentagon spokesman said.
Lieutenant General William Boykin's departure ends a 36-year career,
most of it as a special operations warrior and member of the army's Delta
Force counter-terrorism unit.
Boykin, who is retiring in August, is to be replaced as deputy
undersecretary of defense for intelligence by Major General Richard
Zahner, director of signals intelligence at the National Security Agency,
the Pentagon said.
A devout evangelical Christian, Boykin gained notoriety for a series
of videotaped appearances at churches across the United States in 2003 in
which he portrayed the war on terrorism as a fight with Satan.
In a speech to a group in Oregon in June 2003, Boykin said radical
Islamists hated the United States "because we're a Christian nation."
In another speech describing a battle with a Somali warlord, he
said, "I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real
God and his was an idol."
His comments ran contrary to administration assertions that it was
not at war with Islam and set off a storm of criticism.
The Pentagon's inspector general faulted him for not getting his
speeches cleared and for not clearly stating that his views did not
necessarily represent those of the Defense Department.

And yet .... Bush referred to the invasion of Iraq early on as a
"Crusade", did he not?

The worst part of this, is the statement by The Pentagon. I hope they
have mis-printed it. Statements such as these are always carefully
worded.
The issued response from the Pentagon would be improved a great deal,
were the word, 'necessarily' removed.

As you probably know, the famous 2-star US general, George Patton, thought
he was the reincarnation of a noted Roman commander.
America's got a lot of fruitcakes historically and currently, residing in
positions of great power, and able to do much insane damage should the
opportunity present itself.
I live in a nightmare of a civilization that daily lies like a damned rug,
a violent and greedy madhouse of maniacs who think their Christian God
blesses their wretched behaviour. Terrorism is almost like an abstraction
to me, for I rightly fear my government, the corporate world, and my
fellow citizens much more.
Early on, Bush attempted to strike a more moderate tone about Islam,
calling the terrorist element a "fringe" movement, and praising Islam as a
mostly peaceful religion. But, then later, the extremists took hold of him
and his Cabinet, and one would hear much less about the benevolence of
Muslims, and much more about the small segment that was malevolent.
Finally, the reality line became so blurred, that there was little attempt
to carefully educate the nervous public about the smallness of the
extremist Muslim threat. Rather, every attempt was made to characterize it
as pervasive and growing fast and, consequently, it needed to be military
stomped down in...yep, Iraq. Lines were intentionally blurred again, as
they still are, leading the confused public to think that Saddam was in
cohoots with Al Queda, and that, if your're a Muslim of any kind,
generally, there's reason to suspect you're evil and threatening.
The propagandizing media followed suit, dutifully, and raised its audience
share-ratings to garner more corporate advertisement profit. Religious
leaders fuzzed the reality significantly, too, proclaiming Satan was
behind the Islamic extremism, and attempting to make folks believe the
battle was not so much with flesh and blood, but with supernatural
principalities that were attached to the biblical Antichrist prophesied to
come and destroy the world.
First, we were hit by 19 terrorists that killed 2900 people, and then
stupid, lying, fanatical leaders, miscellaneous right-wing nutcases, and
greedy corporate manipulators took over the show and continued to get many
more unnecessarily killed and maimed for years later. A proto-police state
rose up quickly, and Americans seemed compliant, giving up cherished
privacy and other rights to meet the "great threat." (The color-coded
national terror alerts are almost gone now, a silly relic of mass hysteria
and manipulation by leaders.)
Here we are these days, looking at just one such right-wing powerful
nutcase that rode the hysteria wave, and who is now hanging up his bloody
sword for good. And it's a great reminder, as the dust sort of settles on
the post-911 hysteria, of a nation that went literally berserk -- and
still is in a state of severe psychosis (ready to regenerate its violence
and oppression on anyone who opposes it).
I feel honestly like I'm living in the throes of a dying sick
civilization...that has but one more great holy mission to complete before
a rapturous exit into Heaven.
Doc :))~
