I heard about warming on Mars just this past weekend. Certainly adds to the
evidence that GW is a naturally-occuring phenomenon.

Yeah, it's all fine really. Just keep chopping down forests and burning
fossil fuels. What harm can it do? The worst that will happen is we'll end
up like Mars, right?

Now, you're putting words in my mouth. I never said we should not try to

"entirely".
You and I already had this arguement...

I'd say that the fact that most of the planet Earth was once covered in
tropical and semi-tropical fauna, before mankind came along, indicates
that a warmer global temp is not uncharacteristic.

Absolutely. However, the enmormous spike in temperature change that follows
human industrialisation may just be coincidence - but do you really want to
risk it?

Yes. I'm all for having the tropics move north to where I am!
Yes, that was a joke. More seriously, I think that simply stopping the
poisoning of our planet is enough of a goal. If global warming can be
slowed down, or even stopped, even better.

Yes but never have so many depended on so little, and the margins are
closing.
Call it what you like deny it, but the changes are certainly happening,
wetter wets, drier dry's, and unseasonal changes make for a precarious
lifestyle.
Only when it gets really tight, will the nettle graspers emerge.
Meanwhile the human condition will manifest itself.

No one has said it isn't. But if you want to see what can happening with
a runaway greenhouse effect, look at Venus.
Humans have increased the ppm of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by
30% in the course of a few centuries by deforestation and the use of
fossil fuels. Projections for the end of this century suggest it will
increase by 100-250% more than pre-industrial times.
Even if the greenhouse effect doesn't runaway, the effects could still
be catastrophic, at least for humans and other forms of life.

However, a deal which puts limits on the emissions of the so-called first
world, while allowing India and China to spew with impunity is not the
answer either.
I personally feel that global warming is A, not entirely manmade and B,
unstoppable. That is not to say that we don't have to change our ways.
There are other obvious drawbacks to continuing to pollute, such as the
increase in respiratory disease.

You say spew with impunity, yet what's to stop the US slapping an
embargo or tariffs on countries that do not meet certain emissions
standards? What's to stop the US leading by example?
Answer - nothing.
It might even help the US economy a little bit. After all, virtually
every piece of electronics, clothing and houseware seems to be made in
China or elsewhere.

You're entitled to believe what you like, but when the stakes are entire
human race and evidence for global warming and the human contribution to
it is overwhelming, I'd prefer to err on the side of caution.

No, it wouldn't. Unfortunately, we can't afford to have most of that stuff
made in the US (or Canada, for that matter). Personally, I'm willing to pay
more to buy something made at home, but many aren't, and many can't afford
to. The sweatshop wages are actually a step up in some of those
countries...NOT that I am condoning sweatshops!!! It is just a fact; it
beats garbage-picking for a living, :(.
If the oil peak drives prices waaay up, that may change as the cost of
shipping goods becomes prohibitive.

Yes, it is reasonable to do that. Kyoto is not the way, though.

But if Bush and his buddies know about it but keep saying there's no
such thing, or no proof of global warming, why are they saying that,
why are they denying that which is obvious? Unless they have a plan to
escape it's effects. Do you think they might have a few underground
cities prepared for us all to escape to when it gets too bad up top?
Not enough room for everyone though, so how would they decide who gets
a ticket? Any ideas?

Certainly in my top ten of greatest films ever. Not a single weak

The full title is "Dr. Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and
