Object: GM to Cut 30,000 Jobs, Close 9 Plants (More people to work at Wal Mart or do Wal Mart type jobs!)
More people to work at Wal Mart or do Wal Mart type jobs! Wal Mart got
rich off the poor, and seeks to expand the working poor through
outsourcing and underming wages and benefits so the only place people
can afford to shop at is Wal Mart.
America's next civil war will be a class war, aggrevated by rampant
immigration. Poor fighting poor as well as rich. Unfortunately (or some
here my say fortunately) it will get converted into a racial conflict
since so much poverty is concentrated along racial lines
GM to Cut 30,000 Jobs, Close 9 Plants
AP - 1 hour, 4 minutes ago
DETROIT - General Motors Corp. will eliminate 30,000 jobs and close
nine North American assembly, stamping and powertrain plants by 2008 as
part of an effort to get production in line with demand and position
the world's biggest automaker to start making money again after
absorbing nearly $4 billion in losses so far this year. The
announcement Monday by Rick Wagoner, GM's chairman and CEO, represents
5,000 more job cuts than the 25,000 that the automaker had previously
indicated it planned to cut.

It seems they exiting the manufacturing business to avoid bankruptcy ...
what kind of strategy is that for a manufacturer?
Nice preamble too! I hate WalMart and avoid it like the plague.

It is absolutely stunning that they would close the number1 plant for
quality and productivity, in ALL companies, in ALL of North America. The
third shift was no surprise; plant #2 closing was like a kick in the gut.
My husband and I have enough seniority that the worry for us is not losing
our jobs, but having the pension we worked for there when we hit 30 years!

My Grandfather worked for "Pan American Airlines" all his life and when it
was time for him to collect his pension, they went bankrupt. It was quite a
legal mess from what I heard.

You might want to consider working for the government, where you are
essentially guaranteed a specific pension unless the government itself
goes bankrupt. Far less likely than a foreign corporation selling off
its assets - including your pension.
Sad to say, the pensions of our parents aren't likely to be there, no
matter what the company says/plans today.

Glad to hear it - you should be in relatively good shape, then. Plenty
of other Boomers are finding that they can't retire (or stay retired, if
they've already done so).
Not really a huge deal if you have the opportunity to plan ahead for it,
unfortunately, most people currently losing their pensions never had the
opportunity to make other arrangements. I think mostly the early
Boomers got hit harder than us later ones will.

Yep! I know people older than me (and my age, too) that are still HUGELY in
debt. We owe less than 20K on our house, pay the VISA monthly, etc. Our
starter house was a dump that we spent eleven years fixing up. We made
sixty grand on it (roughly what we put into it...not counting sweat equity,
of course), but had managed to pay it off. We were able to move to a house
we are happy to stay in forever six years ago with only a small mortgage.
A lot of people want the big new house right off the bat and will go 5% down
or even no money down to get it. If the market crashes, as many predict,
they'll be up a creek.
We are a little luckier in Canada that we don't have to worry about medical
insurance for most things, which I understand can get really exorbitant as
one ages or has a major claim.

We live in a globalized market place. The days of pensions are over. Labor goes to the cheapest

That also is so true! The unions have been telling them that for years.
When they do come out with a nice-looking car, it can do wonders. They
can't build enough Soltices (a niche model, but nevertheless) right now and
have had to add a third shift to that plant.

Nice preamble too! I hate WalMart and avoid it like the plague.

It is absolutely stunning that they would close the number1 plant for
quality and productivity, in ALL companies, in ALL of North America.
The third shift was no surprise; plant #2 closing was like a kick in the
gut. My husband and I have enough seniority that the worry for us is not
losing our jobs, but having the pension we worked for there when we hit
30 years!

We live in a globalized market place. The days of pensions are over. Labor
goes to the cheapest bidder. It would help if GM made a car/truck that
people wanted.

That also is so true! The unions have been telling them that for years.
When they do come out with a nice-looking car, it can do wonders. They
can't build enough Soltices (a niche model, but nevertheless) right now and
have had to add a third shift to that plant.

I think marketing departments have been slacking off. Marketers
everywhere are still under the impression that people over the age of 49
are set in their ways and won't try new brands - yet most of the people
I see driving the Scion xB are all in the 45-70n age group (the car is
marketed to the 16-24 age group). Companies that cater to that age
group are showing arthritis commercials with white haired people - which
Boomers don't identify with. Small wonder, most ER admissions for early
Boomers (55-up) are for sports injuries, not the traditional heart
attack/stroke.
If companies can't keep up with the demographics, they will (and are)
going to lose their grip on the market. Moreover, they're completely
missing the group with oodles of money to spend (kids out of college,
house paid off, peak earning in their professional life). Meanwhile,
the car manufacturers are still thinking "Oldsmobile" and "Cadillac" for
that age group. Those are Old Fogey cars!!! Nobody is gonna buy those!!!
(Don't get me started, but just try to find a stick shift available in a
halfway decent American car these days ..... arghh).

as
part of an effort to get production in line with demand and position
the world's biggest automaker to start making money again after

Actually, I should have qualified that with "midsize". We were looking
last winter to replace our 1999 Ford Contour with a slightly larger car,
but you wouldn't believe how much trouble we had finding anything that
had a stick shift and got relatively good gas mileage. I didn't think
my "list" was all that unreasonable! (BTW - love the Contour! No longer
being made, unfortunately ...)
I found both the Camry and the Accord to have too much "interference"
around the stick (crap cluttered all around so that I'd whack your
knuckles if I wasn't being really careful when shifting). Plus, with
the Camry, you couldn't get any options if you wanted a stick (?!?!),
you *had* to buy only the base model. They also try to railroad people
into getting a higher model, by having the base model not have trim
items with matching pain - THAT did not set well with me (I don't care
what the car looks like, really, I just don't like car manufacturers
trying to embarass people by making the purchase of a "cheaper" car so
obvious - why not just have that on all their Corollas, huh? They're
*all* cheaper than Camrys!). So, we ended up with the xB. We were
walking out of the Toyota dealership (in something of an annoyed huff)
when I happened to notice this really, really ugly car that had a stick
shift on the floor model, so I figured if they have a manual
transmission on the floor model, it was a pretty good bet we could add
some options we wanted and still keep the stick - we could! Nice and
clean around the shift, extremely roomy, good mileage (34 mpg). So,
that's what we ended up getting. Good thing I don't care what my car
looks like, because it is one incredibly ugly car.
I really hate shopping for cars. It's torture. Ugh. >_<

I find it easy; I never learned to drive a stick, :(. Plus I deal every

out of my own mouth).
GM could have bought Toyota for $9 billion a decade or so ago. I'm sure
they regret it, although they may have run it into the ground, too.
I really regretted not knowing the stick when my bro-in-law was managing a
British car dealership! Got to take a $140K Jag for a spin. Lots of fun,
but it probably would have been even better with a stick...
Now I know how the other half lives, haha!

goes bankrupt. Far less likely than a foreign corporation selling
off its assets - including your pension.

Sad to say, the pensions of our parents aren't likely to be there, no
matter what the company says/plans today.

We live in a globalized market place. The days of pensions are over.
Labor goes to the cheapest bidder. It would help if GM made a car/truck
that people wanted.

That also is so true! The unions have been telling them that for years.
When they do come out with a nice-looking car, it can do wonders. They
can't build enough Soltices (a niche model, but nevertheless) right now
and have had to add a third shift to that plant.

Jane

I think marketing departments have been slacking off. Marketers
everywhere are still under the impression that people over the age of 49
are set in their ways and won't try new brands - yet most of the people I
see driving the Scion xB are all in the 45-70n age group (the car is
marketed to the 16-24 age group). Companies that cater to that age group
are showing arthritis commercials with white haired people - which
Boomers don't identify with.

Meanwhile, the
car manufacturers are still thinking "Oldsmobile" and "Cadillac" for that
age group. Those are Old Fogey cars!!! Nobody is gonna buy those!!!

Not the Escalade! Just ask a Gangsta Rapper! ('Course, that's an
unsustainable gas guzzler)

(Don't get me started, but just try to find a stick shift available in a
halfway decent American car these days ..... arghh).

My sister got one in a Pontiac Vibe...mind you, a Vibe is the same as a
Toyota Matrix (built in a joint venture plant)

Jane

Actually, I should have qualified that with "midsize". We were looking
last winter to replace our 1999 Ford Contour with a slightly larger car,
but you wouldn't believe how much trouble we had finding anything that had
a stick shift and got relatively good gas mileage. I didn't think my
"list" was all that unreasonable! (BTW - love the Contour! No longer
being made, unfortunately ...)

I found both the Camry and the Accord to have too much "interference"
around the stick (crap cluttered all around so that I'd whack your
knuckles if I wasn't being really careful when shifting). Plus, with the
Camry, you couldn't get any options if you wanted a stick (?!?!), you
*had* to buy only the base model. They also try to railroad people into
getting a higher model, by having the base model not have trim items with
matching pain - THAT did not set well with me (I don't care what the car
looks like, really, I just don't like car manufacturers trying to embarass
people by making the purchase of a "cheaper" car so obvious - why not just
have that on all their Corollas, huh? They're *all* cheaper than
Camrys!). So, we ended up with the xB. We were walking out of the Toyota
dealership (in something of an annoyed huff) when I happened to notice
this really, really ugly car that had a stick shift on the floor model, so
I figured if they have a manual transmission on the floor model, it was a
pretty good bet we could add some options we wanted and still keep the
stick - we could! Nice and clean around the shift, extremely roomy, good
mileage (34 mpg). So, that's what we ended up getting. Good thing I
don't care what my car looks like, because it is one incredibly ugly car.

I really hate shopping for cars. It's torture. Ugh. >_<

I find it easy; I never learned to drive a stick, :(. Plus I deal every
couple years and only buy GM (to buy anything else would be taking the bread
out of my own mouth).

Jags are really crappy cars, Jane. They cost a lot, but they fall apart
really fast. I've only known 2 people who owned one, but they were both
extremely disappointed in them. I think they're made for people who've
"made it" but know less than nothing about cars. Mercedes and Porsche
are both much better made cars (I think they're both less expensive, as
well - I don't exactly shop around for expensive cars). I haven't
really been keeping up on cars since I had kids.
You really should learn how to drive a stick shift - they are soooo much
better in snow/dead battery/other conditions. Plus, there's one less
mechanical part to break down and they're lots more fun to drive! ^_^

GM to Cut 30,000 Jobs, Close 9 Plants
AP - 1 hour, 4 minutes ago

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. will eliminate 30,000 jobs and

close

nine North American assembly, stamping and powertrain plants by
2008 as
part of an effort to get production in line with demand and
position
the world's biggest automaker to start making money again after
absorbing nearly $4 billion in losses so far this year. The
announcement Monday by Rick Wagoner, GM's chairman and CEO,
represents
5,000 more job cuts than the 25,000 that the automaker had
previously
indicated it planned to cut.

It seems they exiting the manufacturing business to avoid

bankruptcy

... what kind of strategy is that for a manufacturer?

Nice preamble too! I hate WalMart and avoid it like the plague.

It is absolutely stunning that they would close the number1 plant

for

quality and productivity, in ALL companies, in ALL of North

America.

The third shift was no surprise; plant #2 closing was like a kick

in

the gut. My husband and I have enough seniority that the worry for

us

when we hit 30 years!

Whoaah there! Porsche are certainly WAY more expensive than Jaguars. A
Carrera convertible won't leave you much change from half a million
dollars! They are very well made, but you pay for it, plus about 20% extra
for the badge. Ditto Mercedes - the little SLK roadster is 50k USD gve or
take. The XK 6 will cost you uyp to 70k USD, but I think a comparable Merc
would be the SLC500 which will cost you 90k

I don't exactly shop around for expensive cars). I haven't

I find it utterly, totally incredible that there are people in the world who
only know how to drive automatics.. A big cultural difference between the US
and Yerp, I guess. We see you lot as driving around in 4 ton Cadillacs that
abosrb every bump but steer like cattle, while we zip around twisty mountain
roads, double de-clutching our little sports cars ;-) Think the opening
scene of "The Italian Job" (the real one, not the ***** Marky Mark
remake).
Driving autos is just soooo boooooring.. like driving dodgem cars at the
fair..
