'God's invisible hand saves Indonesia's mosques'

January 3, 2005
Banda Aceh - In Indonesia's tsunami wastelands on the northern tip of
Sumatra island, little remains of whole towns lost to the colossal
forces that came thundering in from the ocean.
But across these battered shores, >>dozens of mosques still stand<<,
their minarets glinting defiantly in the sun - a phenomenon survivors
in the deeply Islamic region credit as much to divine intervention as
robust architecture.
"God's invisible hands prevent the mosque's destruction," said Mukhlis
Khaeran, who saw the sea sweep away his home village of Baet outside
the north Sumatran city of Banda Aceh, but leave the neighbourhood
mosque relatively intact.
"He punishes us for our greed and arrogance but He will protect his
house," a dejected Khaeran said.
Mosques are an everyday sight in most of Indonesia, but especially in
Aceh, credited with being one of Islam's main gateways into the
archipelago of islands which now forms the world's largest
Muslim-populated country.
Despite a long-lasting independence struggle, Aceh, parts of which are
under traditional Islamic sharia law, has remained a Muslim heartland
for Indonesia, which mostly practices a relaxed interpretation of the
faith. - Sapa-AFP

explain this?
Probably by pointing at the damaged and destroyed
Mosques and comparing the ones remaining to the
hotels, bars, and other structures that remained (or
were destroyed.)
In other words, there is no patter of saving Mosques
or any other structure except location and structural
integrity of the building in question.
Actually, if you are looking for a religious epiphany
or evidence, the Buddhist temples seem to have done
the best.

Actually the buddhist temples were the first buildings to be leveled to
ground, followed by churches and hindu temples and then hotels, police
stations, homes, etc. But no single mosque got destroyed! People stayed
in mosques survived.
Animals and birds have also survived in a miraculous way. Hindus went
to say that the survival of animals prove they are gods!

Not only have I seen pictures of remaining Buddist
temples and destroyed Mosques, there are was also
grisly photos of the dead who took refuge in a Mosque
being dragged out to the roadside and left because no
one has time to pick them up.
You might also note that it is very common for religious
structures to be among the oldest (time tested) structures,
occupying the highest ground etc.

On the contrary, I have seen photos of temples that survived...right down by

worship in much more substantial buildings?

It's pretty much an axiom of religion. How many medieval buildings that
weren't Cathedrals have survived to this day?

It's just that the architects designed some of the mosques to be built of a better
quality than ordinary buildings, so a few of the mosques survived.

Well, dear friends, we're now into the tenth day of the tsunami crisis
and in this battered corner of Asia, the UN is nowhere to be seen --
unless you count at meetings, in five-star hotels, and holding press
conferences.
Aussies and Yanks continue to carry the overwhelming bulk of the burden,
but some other fine folks also have jumped in: e.g., the New Zealanders
have provided C-130 lift and an excellent and much-needed potable water
distribution system; the Singaporeans have provided great helo support;
the Indians have a hospital ship taking position off Sumatra. Spain and
Netherlands have sent aircraft with supplies.
The UN continues to send its best product, bureaucrats.
Most interesting to me was this memo written by Dutch diplomats and
circulated at an EU meeting in Indonesia:
The US military has arrived and is clearly establishing its presence
everywhere in Banda Aceh. They completely have taken over the military
hospital, which was a mess until yesterday but is now completely up and
running. They brought big stocks of medicines, materials for the
operation room, teams of doctors, water and food. Most of the patients
who were lying in the hospital untreated for a week have undergone
medical treatment by the US teams by this afternoon. US military have
unloaded lots of heavy vehicles and organize the logistics with
Indonesian military near the airport. A big camp is being set up at a
major square in the town. Huge generators are ready to provide
electricity. US helicopters fly to places which haven't been reached for
the whole week and drop food. The impression it makes on the people is
also highly positive; finally something happens in the city of Banda
Aceh and finally it seems some people are in control and are doing
something. No talking but action. European countries are until now
invisible on the ground. IOM staff (note: this is a USAID-funded
organization) is very busy briefing the incoming Americans and
Australians about the situation.

I see you represent the American Stupidity well.
The only reason USA assisted Kuwait was because of the OIL.
If Kuwait was without the OIL, USA wouldn't be bothered.
Iraq hasn't been a threat to any country since 1991. USA wanted their OIL
and GWBush had a beef with Saddam. Before the invasjon in 2003,
USA had come up with a dozen undocumented excuses for invading.
I see no problem with USA invading Afghanistan after 911.
The Talibans almost asked for it.
If USA want to invade suppressive countries their next subject should

But they won't because: Burma, couldn't care less. China: Wouldn't dare.

The only reason USA assisted Kuwait was because of the OIL.
Partly correct. They didn't want *Saddam* to have it. In fact, the
invasion of Kuwait by *Iraq* was about oil. The story about reuniting
a 'former province' was an very poor excuse, not a reason.
Iraq accused Kuwait of doing oblique drilling to tap reservoirs that lie
underneath Iraq, that was another of his 'reasons'.
As to the 'former province' part, it's probably about the same
as China trying to take back Taiwan, which it officially still considers
a 'rebel province' but which has been effectively independent and self
governing since the Chinese Revolution.
Kuwait has been a sovereign state for a long time.
If Kuwait was without the OIL, USA wouldn't be bothered.
Less sure about that. Saddam was always expansionist, even if Kuwait
had no particular value, they would have wanted to actively discourage him
from thinking he could annexe another country without someone objecting.
On top of which the UN fully supported military intervention - eventually.
Iraq hasn't been a threat to any country since 1991.
Mmm, not really so. The threat is perhaps not immediate, but if he wasn't
clobbered,
he was going to have another go sooner or later, or his sons were when they
took over. If anything, they were worse than he is. He had a sense of
dynasty
and fully intended to take over the Middle East, sooner or later.
Is it best to wait until he's ready to fight or nobble him now when he
isn't?
USA wanted their OIL
Again, no, they just wanted to ensure *Saddam* didn't have it, or more
correctly,
the money it generated, as he was using it to build up his military.
Invading Kuwait
gave him access to their oil, increasing the amount he had for military
spending, which
of course was the real reason for attacking Kuwait.
and GWBush had a beef with Saddam.
Sure.
Let's face it, he was an arsehole, everyone knew it, and everyone would have
been happy to see him
get rolled. The problems in Iraq now are because two main factions want
control.
You have the former Baath party higher ups who would like a shot at being a
dictator now that
Saddam and his sons are out of the way.
The others are the Shiite Islamic fanatics that would like to set up another
Iranian styled (and supported)
Islamic republic instead of the secular Iraqi one. The people doing most of
the fighting belong to one or
the other of these factions. Both are killing Iraqis to try and prevent an
election, since as long as the interim
appointed government lasts, they can legitimise their actions as fighting
the US. Once a goverment is elected
they are in deep trouble, as it becomes obvious they are just making a power
grab for their own purposes.
A free election is the last thing they want and they are doing everything
they can to make it impossible, in the
hopes that they can take over the country by force of arms.
Before the invasjon in 2003,
USA had come up with a dozen undocumented excuses for invading.
Frankly, any reason would be sufficient for me. He was a rapacious
murdering scumbag.
I see no problem with USA invading Afghanistan after 911.
The Talibans almost asked for it.
Pretty much. AQ basically bought the use of country as a safe haven to
train their
personnel. They had similar extremist Islamic beliefs and AQ had plenty of
money,
whilst Afghanistan was basically destitute. Marriage made in hell.
I guess one could say the Taliban were at least honest politicians, they
stayed
bought and wouldn't give him up.
If USA want to invade suppressive countries their next subject should
be for example Burma, China and ironically Saudi Arabia.
But they won't because: Burma, couldn't care less.
Pretty much. Remember that the US invariably acts in its own interests,
ie they need a reason other than purely humanitarian or political
considerations.
China: Wouldn't dare.
Wouldn't be a good idea. Probably not much point actually, given the
infiltration of capitalism and
the financial benefits they are reaping from places like Hong Kong and
Macau, I suspect communism
as a way of life in China will probably not outlast the last survivors of
the Long March by more than a
decade or two. It might never be a pure democracy but it won't always be
communist IMHO.
Saudi Arabia: Is their USA ally so they close their eyes to what's
happening
in the country.
Saudi Arabia *is* a problem. I suspect the only reason the yanks put up
with the Saudi
royal family and their ways is that they are at least less extreme than the
Wahabbi that would
likely turn it into an even more repressive Islamic State along the lines of
Iran and rabidly anti
western to boot. I guess it's the lesser of two evils.
I suspect the Saudis know this and realise they get US support only as long
as they keep the
oil flowing and try to minimise the AQ support coming from there. It's no
secret that oil rich
Saudis are some of the bankroll for AQ and similar organisations.
Just my 2c worth.

You sound a bit confused yourself. The way it works is like this:
1. US military goes in Iraq and destroys a whole bunch of stuff. Cost:
around $200B.
2. US friendly government is set-up in Iraq
3. US banks loan something like $1.5 Trillion dollars to Iraq so they can
reconstruct their country.
4. US companies get around $1 trillion dollars worth of contracts to rebuild
Iraq.
Profits: $500B
Taxes to government: $200B
6. Mean while, the OIL in IRAQ - sold at fair price - will pay off the $1.5
Trillion loan over the next 100 years or so.
Stat.
I understand your confusion. :o)

None of this surprises me. There are talkers and there are doers. The US
has always been a nation of doers.

You're right about that. Evildoers to be more precise.

Nature destroyed thousands, and God saved millions. God was the
billions
of dollars in aid and supplies, that went out to comfort and save
millions.
***** :
Well, dear friends, we're now into the tenth day of the tsunami crisis
and in this battered corner of Asia, the UN is nowhere to be seen --
unless you count at meetings, in five-star hotels, and holding press
conferences.
Aussies and Yanks continue to carry the overwhelming bulk of the burden,
but some other fine folks also have jumped in: e.g., the New Zealanders
have provided C-130 lift and an excellent and much-needed potable water
distribution system; the Singaporeans have provided great helo support;
the Indians have a hospital ship taking position off Sumatra. Spain and
Netherlands have sent aircraft with supplies.
None of this surprises me. There are talkers and there are doers. The US
has always been a nation of doers.

Yea usually after being called stingy by other nations.

No, whenever one of you people falls over his or hers own shoelaces,
you blurt out the phrase: 'America is stingy' - it's a habit - thus
it doesn't count :)

You see, the mosque was made only of wood, but could resist the flood
that destroyed all other buildings in town!

Just pure luck. Like some drowned and others were lucky to be alive.
It's stupid to see some people thank their god for being alive.
Like their lives are more worth than others who died?

You lack of evidence in the face of destroyed mosques
and standing Buddhist temples (again to no obvious
pattern) is irrelevant.
You may believe any stupid thing you please but
don't try to sell it based on evidence which proves
the premise false.

Hi,
I do not think it is that important but, I did see a picture of a
demolished Mosque on TV. It looked like Indonesia but, I can not be certain
of that. I do know that a Mosque being hit is a tragedy, too. I just
remember seeing the picture and taking note with no idea that it would ever
come up.

Now this Tsunami is much greater than the so-called Noah's flood as
many experts say, but still unable to destroy mosques! How do you
explain this? I think Noah should have built a mosque rather than
building a "boat"

'God's invisible hand saves Indonesia's mosques'
http://www.thestar.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=132&fArticleId=2361914
Despite a long-lasting independence struggle, Aceh, parts of which are
under traditional Islamic sharia law, has remained a Muslim heartland
for Indonesia, which mostly practices a relaxed interpretation of the
faith. - Sapa-AFP

mosques are built with large donations from Saudi oil money and made
from reinforced concrete of high spec as part of Islams drive to
conquer the world.
They are solid structures financed by Saudi cash and that is why they
stand out as surviving buildings in a land of poverty where the
average house is made of basic cheap materials which were washed away.
That is Islamic logic anyway. They twist everything to suit their goal
forgetting about the thousands who were washed away.
