Why, thanks Marv. Actually, I don't much care for safe evenings, and
haven't been happy for years...but the sentiment is nice...;)

Yeah, I know Mexico has a bit of oil.. we'll have to invade them next..
and I know Canada has those tar sands.. you're definitely on the list..
we just line the Abrams battalions up along the border and roll your
possession.. then we can build those fine prisons where everyone gets
electro-shock therapy (whether you need the treatment or not).
I don't think most of our politicians have any big ideas for the illegal
immigrant problem other than to build a big wall along the border. This
impending economic collapse could solve the problem for us though, as
there will no longer be an economic incentive to come to the US.

Remind you of someplace.......?
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic
mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are
seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public
displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security,
the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be
ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look
the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions,
assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy
over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial ,
ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists,
terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the
military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and
the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are
glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost
exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender
roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is
homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.
6. Controlled Mass Media
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the
government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by
government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and
executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government
over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most
common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion.
Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders,
even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed
to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist
nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power,
creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and
power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real
threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated
entirely, or are severely suppressed .
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open
hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for
professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free
expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often
refuse to fund the arts.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost
limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to
overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of
patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually
unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of
friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions
and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from
accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national
resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright
stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete
sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against
or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to
control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and
manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their
judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Thank you!

I've been Free of the Addiction for almost 3 and half years -- very
proud of that one!

You have every reason to be! I remember when you announced you were
quitting. How could that much time have flown by so fast? Time flies
when you're having fun!
I noticed a couple of points you made in your reply to Randy, and I
have a comment or two -- first, on your comparison of US medical care
to police and fire services -- in an emergency medical situation, no
one asks for your policy number before providing emergency medical
care. They take care of you first, and ask questions later.
I remember when your wife was in the hospital. How is she doing now? I
have a close family friend who had an emergency medical situation
arise, and she went through several tests to determine she needed a
surgical procedure. She was admitted to the hospital, received the
surgery, and spent another two weeks in the hospital recovering. After
that, she needed six more weeks of home health care, where a nurse
stopped by practically every day to make sure she was getting proper
levels of medication, etc. Other than a small co-pay, everything was
covered by insurance. She has fully recovered, and she did not lose
her house.
But just so you know, I'd be happy to see the US adopt a system
similar to the one they have in France. As it is now, Massachusetts
just instituted a plan that will require everyone to be covered by
insurance. And California is working on a similar plan.
As for your remark about "illegal aliens" -- the word "alien" means
someone from another country who is not native to the United States.
It is not a derogatory term. And "illegal" simply means the person is
not here legally. Should just anyone be allowed into Canada, where
they would do your job for several dollars less per hour than you'd do
it? How would feel if your boss hired a person not in your country
legally, and then paid the person several dollars less per hour than
he paid you?
I'd like to see the government of Mexico improve conditions for their
own people. But they have no incentive to do that as long as millions
of their people can come here and work for wages that require them to
live ten or twelve in a cramped apartment. And that causes wages (for
people in an underclass who are already hurting) to stay low, due to
competition from an overabundance of laborers.
Anyway, I'll look forward to your rant, and I'm sure I'll have some
comments.
Cheers!

It most certainly does -- and it's all been good. You always wish you
had quit earlier or never started but such is Life -- better late then
never.

I noticed a couple of points you made in your reply to Randy, and I
have a comment or two -- first, on your comparison of US medical care
to police and fire services -- in an emergency medical situation, no
one asks for your policy number before providing emergency medical
care. They take care of you first, and ask questions later.

Sure -- it was some 'mild' exageration on my part. BUT -- the fire
and police services don't bill you later.

She has fully recovered, and she did not lose
her house.

I'm glad that it worked out for them. I'd have to guess they're
covered.
But what about the 47 million Americans, or 16 percent of the
population, who were without health insurance in 2005, the latest
government data available.

But just so you know, I'd be happy to see the US adopt a system
similar to the one they have in France. As it is now, Massachusetts
just instituted a plan that will require everyone to be covered by
insurance. And California is working on a similar plan.

This is a good trend too.

They're immigrants just like everyone else was at one time (with the
exception of native Americans but then again they likely came from
somewhere else too).
Labour laws prevent exploitation and should/would be enforced. If I
lost my job due to unlawful hiring practices by my employer I would
promptly report him/her/them.

Make incentives for Mexico -- their economy depends heavily on trade
with the U.S. Flex some monetary and economic muscle -- I'm not well
informed as to Mexico's current political system but ... it would
appear it's in need of some fundamental reform with regards to their
labour practices and legal and social institutions.
Who in the U.S. benefits from this undocumented immigration? U.S.
manufacturers and low-skill service providers -- they're the ones
doing the hiring after all.

Anyway, I'll look forward to your rant, and I'm sure I'll have some
comments.

Cheers!

Heh!
Cheers to you too!
