HILLBILLY: MY HOUND DOG WILL TRACK DOWN OSAMA!
Snaggle-toothed, shotgun-toting hillbilly Bobby Earl Herstock has vowed to
track down elusive terror chief Osama Bin Laden -- with the help of his
faithful hound dog Bessie!
Bessie the bloodhound is the best hunting dog in the world, according to
her proud owner, who claims her nose is five times more sensitive than any
other on record.
"That son of a gun can hole up in any hollow he wants, you just put Bessie
within 5,000 miles of him and she'll run him down like a coon or a possum,"
says 44-year-old Herstock, who lives outside Kingsport, Tenn.
"If Bin Laden is on God's Earth," he vows, "my Bessie will find him."
Despite recent claims that the U.S. is "closer than ever" to capturing the
kill-crazy 9/11 mastermind, as of press time, the Marines, CIA and other
forces involved in history's most intense manhunt have failed to snare him.
That's been frustrating to ultra-patriotic Herstock, who decided to join
the search after his favorite nephew was wounded in Iraq.
"When my nephew Dalton got ambushed, that was the last straw," Herstock
recalls. "I rubbed Bessie's ears and I said, 'Well, looks like it's up to
you and me, girl.' "
While it may sound like Herstock's been chugging a little too much
moonshine, pooches are already playing a vital role in the war on terror.
Dogs are being used at airports worldwide to sniff out explosives.
What's more, Bessie's nose is exceptionally sensitive, even for a dog. A
typical bloodhound's sense of smell is one million times more acute than a
human's, but Bessie's is 5 million times more acute.
"Some scientists heard about Bessie and did the tests," Herstock says.
"Shoot, Bessie can tell identical twins apart. Ain't another bloodhound in
the world who can do that."
Dr. Anne Grestwood, a university professor who teaches veterinary medicine,
performed the tests.
"An ordinary bloodhound can detect one ounce of vanillaldehyde diffused in
a sealed room containing 33 cubic miles of air," explains the expert.
"Bessie could detect the chemical in 160 cubic miles of air."
Bessie's ability to sniff out trouble is so remarkable, law enforcement
agencies have called upon her master for aid on many occasions.
Among 6-year-old Bessie's amazing feats, she:
* Located a missing 4-year-old girl who wandered off from a camping site.
* Helped to capture an escaped convict, although he'd crossed three deep,
fast-moving streams.
* Tracked a murderer down after locating a corpse in the woods -- even
though the body had been there for two years.
Herstock says he'll travel to Afghanistan at his own expense and pick up
the trail at the Tora Bora cave complex that was Bin Laden's last known
hideout.
He says all Bessie will need is an article of clothing worn by the Al Qaeda
honcho, "anything from a turban to dirty drawers."
He expects U.S. authorities in possession of such a garment will willingly
turn it over to him.
"I figure they've tried everything else, they'll be ready to let me and
Bessie take a whirl," he says.
