Condiment History - Part 1
Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise=A0was
manufactured in England.
In fact,=A0the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of=A0the=A0condiment
scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz,=A0Mexico, which was to be the next
port of call for the=A0great ship after its stop in New York.
This would=A0have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever
delivered to Mexico.... But as we know....the=A0great ship did not make
it to New York....The ship hit=A0an iceberg and sank....and the cargo
was forever lost....
The people of=A0Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise,=A0and were
eagerly awaiting its delivery....were=A0disconsolate at the
loss....Their anguish was so great, that=A0they declared=A0a "National
Day of Mourning" which they still=A0observe to this day....
The "National Day of=A0Mourning" occurs each year on May=A05th.... and
is known....of course....as Sinko de Mayo....
;)
I know, I know.
That was baaaaaad!

Does deceased actress Virginia Mayo have anything to do with the history =
of mayonnaise? I always thought of her when some waitress yelled out, =
"Hold the mayo!"

No.
I believe mayonnaise is most likely French....like Bearnaise sauce and
if you are allergic to it you can always get some "Flonaise". :)

I always thought of her when some
waitress yelled out, "Hold the mayo!"

And who do you fantasize about when you hear "Have you any Grey Poupon"?
just curious!
Disclaimer:
Please check the above information which may or mayonnot be correct - as
I confess to being feverish and have also consumed a large quantity of
NYQUIL.

Eventually, the mayo was recovered and the boxes were taken to Ireland
in order to make sure they had retrieved all 12,000 jars.
The facility where they kept the jars for verification was located
in......
County Mayo =)

That joke likely scarred a lot of survivors of that tragedy ... I can just
see them now lining up outside the Mayo Clinic...

Ha ha!
Thank heavens for Miracle Whip!
It'll whip the mayonnaise hankering right out of ya!
That is of course, what they use over at the Mayo Clinic to wean the
junkies off the stuff. ;)
