Owners of St. Bernard nursing home charged with negligent homicide
The owners of a St. Bernard Parish nursing home where 34 people died during
Hurricane Katrina were charged with 34 counts of negligent homicide, state
Attorney General Charles Foti announced Tuesday.
Salvador and Mabel Magano, owners of St. Rita's Nursing Home near Poydras,
turned themselves to state authorities today at 3 p.m., Foti said.
Officials had been looking for the Manganos since a FEMA recovery team began
pulling the 34 bodies from the home last week. The Manganos are being held
in Baton Rouge pending bail.
Parish officials last week said the owners had refused evacuation buses
offered the day before the storm. Foci on Tuesday said the owners also
failed to call an ambulance service they had under contract to provide for
an evacuation of the home's patients.
"They had adequate notice that the worse nightmare for the state of
Louisiana was about to occur, and they did nothing," Foci said. "Their
inaction resulted in the deaths of these people."
If convicted, each defendant faces up to five years in prison for each
count.

The very least they deserve. I remeber how much of a fuss you made about
"French people leaving their relatives to die while they went on holiday" in
the context of an unexpected heatwave. I have yet to see a similar fuss from
you about Americans PURPOSELY leaving people to drown in a flood..I can't
say I'm surprised though.

I believe I said I was "disgusted" several times and have mentioned that I
could not understand how a mayor (or anyone) could order a mandatory
evacuation without providing a way out for those who can not get out on
their own.
The only minimally supportive thing I have said is that it is not *all* the
fault of FEMA and George Bush. These charges back that up.

But you're not using this as a stick to beat Americans with as you did with

very surprised though..

I don't believe I went on and on about the French (unless it was because I
was replying to your unending posts)...just said how appalling I thought it
was. Ditto for those who abandoned the poor and elderly in New
Orleans...particularly the governor, who did not allow the Red Cross in to
feed those at the shelters.

They weren't "left". The staff of the nursing home, as well as their
families, also stayed there during Katrina. Relatives of all the
residents were called prior to the storm, if they wanted them to be
moved elsewhere.
Incredibly bad decision, but it was definitely not abandonment. It will
be interesting to see if the DA manages to prove true negligence.

The owners of a St. Bernard Parish nursing home where 34 people died

during

Hurricane Katrina were charged with 34 counts of negligent homicide, state
Attorney General Charles Foti announced Tuesday.

Salvador and Mabel Magano, owners of St. Rita's Nursing Home near Poydras,
turned themselves to state authorities today at 3 p.m., Foti said.

Officials had been looking for the Manganos since a FEMA recovery team

began

pulling the 34 bodies from the home last week.

If convicted, each defendant faces up to five years in prison for each
count.
