'Homosexuality is wrong' spells trouble
School bars T-shirt, but First Amendment-rights win out

A high school student got in trouble with administrators for wearing a
T-shirt that expressed her opposition to homosexual behavior.
The student, whose name was withheld, was sent to the principal's
office at her Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., school, where she was told to
change shirts or leave campus, according to the Pacific Justice
Institute, a Sacramento, Calif.-based public-interest law firm.
The front of the T-shirt says "tolerance is the virtue of believing in
nothing," and the back says "truth is truth – homosexuality is wrong."
Parents of the teen, described as an A student with no history of
disciplinary problems, called the institute for help.
"It is regrettable when parents have to choose which right their child
will be deprived of – free speech or a public education," said Kevin
Snider, chief counsel for PJI.
A PJI attorney immediately called the school and later faxed a letter
explaining the students' First Amendment rights apply on a school
campus.
School officials, pointing to a policy based on "tolerance and
diversity," explained a homosexual would be offended by a shirt that
says "homosexuality is a sin."
PJI's president, Brad Dacus, argued, however, "One-way tolerance is
not tolerance, but tyranny."
"Intolerance of students with religious or moral convictions should
have no place in public education," he said.
The school dropped its demand of the student after PJI told officials
she will continue to wear the shirt and others expressing her values
and beliefs, at her discretion.

I think we can solve all dress-code issues in schools by bringing back

make a couple of new friends, I put on my "Bush is a Moron" T-shirt ;-)

Well, hell, yes, if dressing everyone in the same clothes will result in
less violence, then why not promote it for ALL Americans?
Imagine the daily fretting -- "I don't know what the ***** to wear
today?" -- will be gone! Just a closet and a chest of drawers full of only
two solid colors? No more difficult attire decisions every day!
And since some university studies show IQ, mental concentration and memory
retention improve, why not pass along this wonderful 'cure' to the entire
population?
I support a constitutional amendment.

It HAS been shown that kids in uniform are better behaved. Aside from that,
it takes away the expensive "brand-name" fetish that most kids have, at
least for school. Believe it or not, they CAN change when they get home!

'Homosexuality is wrong' spells trouble
School bars T-shirt, but First Amendment-rights win out

A high school student got in trouble with administrators for wearing
a
T-shirt that expressed her opposition to homosexual behavior.
The student, whose name was withheld, was sent to the principal's
office at her Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., school, where she was told
to
change shirts or leave campus, according to the Pacific Justice
Institute, a Sacramento, Calif.-based public-interest law firm.
The front of the T-shirt says "tolerance is the virtue of believing
in
nothing," and the back says "truth is truth - homosexuality is
wrong."
Parents of the teen, described as an A student with no history of
disciplinary problems, called the institute for help.
"It is regrettable when parents have to choose which right their
child
will be deprived of - free speech or a public education," said Kevin
Snider, chief counsel for PJI.
A PJI attorney immediately called the school and later faxed a
letter
explaining the students' First Amendment rights apply on a school
The school dropped its demand of the student after PJI told
officials
she will continue to wear the shirt and others expressing her values
and beliefs, at her discretion.
My son's school bans ALL t-shirts with slogans! I think that is the
best
way to handle it.
I think school uniforms are the best way to handle problems with
teenage
attire. Let the school provide the uniforms to the students,
everyone
gets the same thing - pants, shirt.
Woods
Yep. My son is not in high school yet, but the Catholic high school he
will
attend does have uniforms. I would have hated it when I was a
teenager,
but
I think it's great now.
Jane
Well, hell, yes, if dressing everyone in the same clothes will result in
less violence, then why not promote it for ALL Americans?
Imagine the daily fretting -- "I don't know what the ***** to wear
today?" -- will be gone! Just a closet and a chest of drawers full of
only
two solid colors? No more difficult attire decisions every day!
And since some university studies show IQ, mental concentration and
memory
retention improve, why not pass along this wonderful 'cure' to the
entire
population?
I support a constitutional amendment.

It HAS been shown that kids in uniform are better behaved. Aside from
that,
it takes away the expensive "brand-name" fetish that most kids have, at
least for school.
Well, speaking as someine who went to two schools that required uniform I'll
say you're a bit off there. What actaully happens is that kids bend/break
the rules as far as they can (Lacoste socks and jumpers were the thing in my
day!) to incorporate their label fetishes into the "uniform". Also, it costs
a fair bit to kit kids out with a new uniform every year, so if your parents
aren't as well off as others, you get to wear your brother's old uniform
(and my brother was a lot bigger than me!) or get it second/third hand from
well meaning, though vaguely patronising (and often humiliating to a
teenager) "help" organisations within the school. Naturally, the designer
clothing snobs can spot a second hand blazer like a shark can detect a drop
of blood in an olympic swimming pool..
Believe it or not, they CAN change when they get home!

I agree that this is the best way to deal with this issue, but if the
school is going to allow kids to wear "Gay Pride" shirts,
anti-President Bush shirts and the like, then this young lady has
every right to wear the shirt of her choosing.

My son's school bans ALL t-shirts with slogans! I think that is the best
way to handle it.

I agree that this is the best way to deal with this issue,'
No you don't, bitchtits, you just said doing such a thing was Nazism!

The front of the T-shirt says "tolerance is the virtue of believing in
nothing," and the back says "truth is truth - homosexuality is wrong."
Parents of the teen, described as an A student with no history of
disciplinary problems, called the institute for help.
"It is regrettable when parents have to choose which right their child
will be deprived of - free speech or a public education," said Kevin
Snider, chief counsel for PJI.
My son's school bans ALL t-shirts with slogans! I think that is the best

I agree that this is the best way to deal with this issue, but if the
school is going to allow kids to wear "Gay Pride" shirts,
anti-President Bush shirts and the like, then this young lady has
every right to wear the shirt of her choosing.
Tony
Yes, of course.

And the silly ***** could've avoided the whole shebang by not wearing
the T-shirt. The T-shirt was obviously worn in a deliberate attempt to
provoke. What is wrong with you fuckin' fundie shitheads eh pantyboy?
Don't the people she's trying to provoke have the right 'NOT' to see
the ***** printed on it? I hope they let her wear it but forced her
to wear a jacket or something all day to hide the ridiculous slogan on

Perhaps some gay/lesbian students who have already endured harassment,
name-calling and physical violence from people who think that it's okay
to punish people who are doing something they think is "wrong". Kind of
like wearing a "Christians are Infidels!" shirt in, say, Turkey.

Provoked? I'm provoked all the time by gay lobbyism. Yes, you can do
whatever you want in bed, WH. I would love to have the right not to see
the ***** gay lobbyists in the papers, in TV or in the street. They
are all over us.

That's weird. Maybe it's your attire ( J/K ).
No such thing here ... other then the gay marriage broohaha that just
went thru the courts. But for me on a daily basis or whatever, can't say
I have gays and lesbians provoking me or the family in any manner. Of
course, we're not big news-hounds watching the news on the TV.
