Soooo....how we've arrived, in America, at this "moral self-repair" is by
more personal conformity, more regimentation, more punishment, more
"rehab," more use of antidepressant and tranquilizing chemicals, more
state and citizen monitoring of our private lives, more devotion to
hierarchial human power structures, more police and private security, more
intrusive body and property searches, more attention to filtered news and
mindless trivia, et al ...all to get that crime rate reduced, stat scores
up... a more tranquil, safe and orderly America. We're movin' on up!
I've read pieces of euphoric statistical pieces just like this one that
popped into the popular mainstream media periodically throughout the past
four decades. Yep, articles like this appeared even in what the article
said was that generational period of mine, the baby-boomers, with all
their hedonism and violence. The article failed to mention that the social
upheaval of the 60s was in large part created by the conformity,
repression, and oppression of American society by social, political,
religious, altruistic and unrealistic ideological ultra-conservatism --
and that lead to Jack being a very dull boy, indeed. Jill wasn't any
better. Little wonder in the milieau of this calming pond of conformity,
the tranquility of Pleasantville, people of my generation felt stifled,
bored, uncreative...unappreciated or criticized for standing out from the
crowd of "normal" people, with their "normal jobs" living in their "normal
neighborhoods." Police and the military were held up to be not only the
protectors against physical violence, but the guardians of the status quo
at any cost, and the enforcers of a fascistic mindset and puritanical
morality. Hell, it eventually lead to rebellion and violence. Where else
would it go?
And so will go this latest round of conformity, authority worship, passive
piety, censorship, devotion to the corporate beehive, etc.
You want a nice controlled environment without the long evolvement leading
to a civilizational epiphany of simple, honest mutual self-respect? Just
use the proved shortcut of coerced or forced conformity, especially when
there's something "dark and threatening" that is about to devour society.
Conformity loves a perceived, pervasive common societal threat for it to
grow rapidly, and out of it comes fascism....complacency, resignation,
acceptance to the tenth degree if it's allowed to exist long enough.
After WW2, communism served this purpose nicely. Today, it's terrorism.
The problem is with this shortcut--it doesn't transform the individual. It
just makes him more obedient, afraid of ostracization or punishment...of
"standing out" from the rest.
Yep, as in Nazi Germany, the American society, the citizenry, has recently
become remarkably conformist, highly organized, test scores have zoomed up
(with school uniforming), concentration has narrowed to getting a higher
paying career, accumulating vast sums of materialistic goods, narcissm and
hedonism have increased, wider, expansive, creative thinking has gradually
evaporated, individualism has given way to the group-mind, people are
reporting "suspicious" activity to authorities, vigilance for the common
threat has become a "protective" duty, and its all become quite
widespread. Police, national security and the military have become the
faithful watchers of the flock, and the even the flock surveils the flock.
The flock is only violent when the state identifies the enemies, otherwise
the real enemies--the sheepherders--go about about their fascistic tasks
of more control of the citizenry almost unfettered. And they accumulate
large profits, too.
Yes, stevie, America has grown less violent--the statistics don't lie.
Physical crimes are generally down, and have been for some years.
But, as usual, statistics don't tell all the story, but they can be made
to tell you the epilogue of the story you so much want to believe in.
