I've often thought that there must be something wrong with the idea of
perfect happiness. In a Heavenly cricket match, the batsman is only
content when he is hitting the ball over the clouds. The bowler is only
content when he is taking the batsman's wicket.
A paradox. Would you ask God, next time you are passing, how things are
arranged to accomodate all?

on his daily walk, he stops for a chat and I invite him for a simple

Griiiiiiiiiiiiiiins Aiden....at last....18 years is too long a wait.
After the rugby world cup and Wilkinson's final drop goal..this must
hurt.
Don't worry...I've been suffering for a long time, and it's so nice to
have a victory like this.
Incidently...it really was the best Test series I have ever seen.
Superb cricket from both teams.
At the end of the day, the real winner is cricket itself. ;)

Grins CO. Hey, I didn't realise you were Australian.
Yep, England's winter tour may well be a different matter
altogether...I'm not too certain that we won't have problems in
Pakistan (with the cricket..as well as the crowds) this winter.
We have dire need of Mr Warne. Even after all these years, he still
competes, and there never has been anyone with his variety and disguise
of spin, or who could turn the damned ball on glass if needed.
Gillespie just badly timed his loss of form..he's a great bowler. Tait
looks to be more than promising. Give him Mc'grath's control, and he
will be formidable indeed. Brett Lee bowled his heart out.
We won...but I won't throw anything. I have no illusions about
Australia. Too good a team by far.
Still....I'll bask for a while anyway....;)

OK. Next question then. In cricket they talk about "test series". Why this
"test"? Isn't "series" enough?
Because a 'test match' is different, from say, a 'one day match'. A 'test
match' is played over 5 days, requiring 2 innings to be completed, or the
game ends in a draw... there is no limit to the number of overs that can be
played, but the team captains must keep in mind that they must complete 2
innings before the end of the fifth day, so bating from the begining of day
1 through to day 5 of a test just results in a draw.... thus, there is some
tactical decisions made as to when to "declare", if your team is batting,
and doesn't look like they're going to be dismissed by the attacking team.
(Jeez, I don't think I could have worded that in a more confusing manner...)
A one day match on the other hand takes place in one day, generally with
each team being limited to 50 overs each. There's a new type of cricket
game that is gaining popularity of late, known as "20/20" which is pretty
much the same as a one dayer, except each team is limited to only 20 overs
batting/fielding.
A 'test series' is a series of test matches, as standard english diction
would imply... which also follows to a 'One day series', which is a series
of one day matches.
WOW. After all this time, I've never thought that cricket was a complicated
game... but damn, it's hard to verbalize the simplicity.

It's just the way to describe cricket played at the highest level. It
is given 'Test' status, and counts as the most important and highest
level of the game that can be played.
Likewise, not all Countries where cricket is played are allowed 'Test'
status.
Test sides..those the ICC (International cricket council) have granted
the ultimate accolade to are;-
Australia, England, South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, New Zealand,
India, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Bangledesh. These are the only Countries
that are allowed the ultimate status of playing Test cricket.
It's played in a lot of other places...world-wide really, but none come
to the standard required to compete at this top level. Scotland,
Ireland, Holland, France, America, Kenya, Canada....etc etc play one
another. A competition between a lesser Country and a Test Country
would be pointless due to the diffeent levels of skill. These other
Countries play a series..not a Test.
It also distinguishes between the shortened version of the game which
is completed in one full day, and known as 'The one day series', and
the ultimate 'Test' of skill, which is completed in five full playing
days.
I used to play every day in the English summer, and my passion for the
game has never abated. It is the apex in sport of character, bravery,
skill, dexterity, concentration and determination. It is character
forming and a game played with intensity and friendship combined.
I love it...;)
