Recieved a request from the DOD two weeks ago. The request is a =
voluntary call up for heavy armor personnel. Several others from my =
reserve unit also recieved the same request. I haven't been in a tank =
since 1992. My reserve duty following Desert Storm consisted of supply. =
After a long debate with myself and family I've decided to go. My =
physical was Tuesday of last week. Although 44 yo, I'm in perfect =
health. I have a departure date of 09/28. I'll probably be brought up to =
speed on new targeting and imaging equipment but I simply don't know =
what's ahead. Truth be known, I don't have a good feeling about this. =

Consider all the above things together. And since he has been called a
chickenhawk in this newsgroup, the simplest explanation is that he lied about
Iraq (to get rid of "chickenhawk" label) and is currently in Wyoming.

McDonald just made an absolute tit of himself trying to "decribe" how a DU
round works:

I haven't read where anyone says otherwise. You're confusing conscience
with duty and unless you've been in an environment where you are honour
bound to fulfill your duty I'm not surprised you don't understand it.

I have to disagree. Military oaths are part of the service creed they are
the base for the self discipline required to live and work within that
environment. As for freedom? there are rules and regulations that
everyone has to adhere to whether in the services or not.

I suspect it depends what oath you are swearing, promising to serve your
country can hardly be considered against the Bible but I'd be interested
to see exactly what the Bible says about it, do you have a reference?

I would imagine that what is asked/demanded of a member of the armed
forces is pretty obvious. If someone joins the armed forces these days
and doesn't expect to actually carry out their duty then it was a pretty
stupid decision on their part.
Personally having seen the 'want everything now for nothing' culture that
our youth appears to be living to I'd much rather mix with those that
understand that duty is the other side of the coin of freedom, everyone
of us has duties to our fellow citizens and our nations as part of the
freedom we enjoy, (IMHO).
Having said such I can even go a little further and
conclude that swearing oaths is a very stupid thing to do.
Obviously we have a difference of opinion then. Do you think
the allied armies that fought and died in Belgium during WWII
were stupid for following their oaths? would you condemn them
as you do the troops in Iraq today?

because this person is terminally ill by cancer and suffering all kinds of
agonies.
I stand by my conclusion that, IMHO, swearing oaths is totally
contradictionairy to freedom of conscience. If you have sworn an oath,
your bound, your conscience is no longer free which is the opposite
of having freedom of conscience. In a free society, defending the
freedom of conscience, soldiers should have the option of getting
out as soon as they want.
I shall look up the passage of the Bible.
