In the Course of World War III

It is not strange for terrorism to strike London. Neither the dangers
nor the perils are new. Britain's position on the war on terrorism
and the war against Iraq made it, at the onset, the top country on the
list of targeted countries. When terrorism engulfed Madrid with blood
and defacement, there was not choice for London but to wait its turn.
Many were expecting that terrorism would repeat the Spanish scenario on
the British playground. Most probably this terrorism was eager to
diminish Blair's chances of winning the elections. However, what has
been short of achieving prior to the elections in Britain, became
possible in parallel with the G8 summit, meeting on the British
territories. The fact sent the message in various directions; not to
mention the specificity of the crime scene. Indeed, the scene is the
capital of a superpower, considered to be the closest to George
Bush's methodology, in addition to its European weight and its
central financial role.
The attacks against London remind us of a series of facts: they are not
a declaration of war, but merely a chapter from World War III, ignited
by the attacks of September 11th 2001. It was obvious from start that
the world found itself facing a World War, radically different from the
previous World Wars that wrecked the previous century and marked the
end of empires and the rise of others. In other words, the London
attacks remind us that the world is still amidst this war, which
captivated it.
These attacks re-stress that this world war is not waged with
traditional methods, with regard to the battlefields or the power
balance considerations or the decisive opportunities. The superpower
countries engaged in the war on terrorism lack the essential element
that was provided by the traditional wars: the ability to determine the
position of the enemy, the battlefield for the confrontation and the
size of the enemy's power, in order to prepare the necessary force to
defeat this enemy. In such a war, a group of individuals and a few
bombs are enough to create chaos, instigate commotion and fear in a
city the size of London resulting in the loss of billions of dollars,
not to mention promoting the image of an unsafe city for residence,
tourism or investment.
This war can not be concluded by a KO. The dismantling of a small cell
will not prevent the rise of another; especially a war where punches
are being exchanged - the Iraqi scene is a sheer example - and
might generate a new generation of terrorists. The most dangerous
feature of this war might be the fact that one side- the superpowers-
has clear targets and designations, while the other side lives without
any known identity. This means that the superpowers are fighting a
changeable ghost who might retaliate in any capita, airport or hotel.
In the absence of a clear identity for the enemy it is impossible to
achieve a victory, as it is impossible to negotiate with the enemy.
The London attacks are only a chapter in a long and all-out war that is
taking place in a world of gathering data, tracking suspects and
assets, storming hideouts and dismantling small cells. Perhaps for
that reason the US and the other countries participating in the war on
terror, should re-examine, once again, the different nature of this war
in order to better adjust with its developments. Especially since it
turns out that victory will also require different political
approaches, not only gathering data and launching attacks.

I thought you bought an island somewhere
in the South pacific and had it well stocked
with boy from 11 to 14. Yet, here you are
