Iran a grim shadow, Dumbo warns
By Anne Davies
August 30, 2007
US PRESIDENT George Bush has warned that Iran's efforts to acquire
nuclear weapons could put the entire Middle East "under the shadow of
a nuclear holocaust".
Mr Bush also has given his strongest indication yet that he intends to
continue with the increased troop numbers in Iraq.
He said that pulling out would harm American interests in the Middle
East for decades and expose the US to dire threats, including
increased terrorism and a nuclear arms race in the region by allowing
Sunni extremists backed by al-Qaeda to flourish and Shiite extremism
in Iran to spread.
"I want our fellow citizens to consider what would happen if these
forces of radicalism and extremism are allowed to drive us out of the
Middle East," he said. "The region would be dramatically transformed
in a way that could imperil the civilised world.
"Extremists of all strains could be emboldened by the knowledge that
they forced America to retreat. Terrorists could have more havens to
conduct attacks on Americans and our friends and allies. Iran could
conclude we were weak and could not stop them gaining nuclear
weapons."
Mr Bush said that once Iran had nuclear weapons it would set off a
nuclear arms race in the region and would allow extremists to control
a key part of the world's energy supply, holding the Western world to
ransom.
But Mr Bush did not mention military action against Iran =E2=80=94 something
that is being urged on him by some advisers =E2=80=94 instead stressing that
the US was pursuing a strategy of isolating Iran through economic
sanctions.
He gave his most upbeat assessment to date of progress in Iraq,
quashing speculation in Washington that the Administration wanted
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki replaced.
=E2=96=A0US troops released seven Iranians yesterday, hours after detaining
them at a central Baghdad hotel. Troops raided the Sheraton Ishtar
hotel and took away a group of about 10 people.
Several had weapons in their cars, and none had the appropriate
permits, the military said.
=E2=96=A0The only US officer tried over the abuse scandal at Baghdad's Abu
Ghraib jail has been cleared of mistreating prisoners but found guilty
of disobedience. Lieutenant-Colonel Steven Jordan, 51, was charged
after photographs of naked Iraqi prisoners being tormented by grinning
US troops emerged in 2004. He now faces sentencing for disobeying an
order not to discuss the scandal with others, after he sent two emails
to a colleague.

Dumbo really likes that whole 'mushroom cloud' imagery. It seems to
have the desired effect on the uninitiate.
Mr Bush said that once Iran had nuclear weapons it would set off a
nuclear arms race in the region and would allow extremists to control
a key part of the world's energy supply, holding the Western world to
ransom.
So instead of developing alternate energy sources Bush decides to
bankrupt the US and launch wars of agression with no definable end.
The BushCheney guts R&D into energy efficiency and new energy sources,
and turns us into a militarily agressive terror of the planet.. and
the evangelicals are cheering this on ? I'm trying to get my head
around this.

That's what this gentleman thinks too.
Last count was he'd stockpiled a total of 79,000 rounds of ammunition.
