Rescuers search Iran quake rubble
An earthquake has killed more than 20,000 people in Iran and injured
thousands more in the ancient Silk Road city of Bam.
Rescuers and survivors are digging through the rubble, many with their
bare hands, in an attempt to find anyone buried alive.
About 70 per cent of the buildings in the historic city, a popular
tourist spot about 1,000 kilometres south-east of the capital, Tehran,
have collapsed and many people are feared trapped under the rubble.
"Rescue workers have found more bodies. The figure is now more than
20,000," a senior government official said.
A further 50,000 people are reported to have been injured.
Bam is without water, electricity or gas and as night fell
temperatures headed below freezing.
Residents set fires to stay warm and made torches from palm branches
for light as they dug with bare hands for survivors.
Crying infants and dazed adults gathered in city squares, huddling
against the cold under woollen blankets. Rubble-strewn pavements are
lined with the injured, some on intravenous drips.
State media say two hospitals have collapsed, crushing many of the
staff, and the remaining hospitals are full. The injured are being
ferried to neighbouring towns.
Mohammad Ali Karimi, governor of Kerman province, where Bam is
located, has made a televised appeal for blood donors.
Ali Shafiee, governor of Bam, told state TV: "The city of Bam must be
built from scratch".
Hundreds of bodies were bundled into trucks. Mechanised diggers
hollowed out trenches where the dead were buried quickly without
rites.
"I have lost all my family. My parents, my grandmother and two sisters
are under the rubble," said Maryam, 17.
One old woman, disconsolate with grief, smeared her face with dirt,
only able to utter: "My child, my child".
Anger
Angry residents are accusing the government of doing nothing to help
them and say they are still without tents, water and heating.
Witnesses say the road to Bam is choked with ambulances and people
desperate to find family members.
Houses in the date-growing area of Bam are traditionally made from
mud-brick, making them vulnerable to earthquakes.
A large part of Bam's ancient citadel was destroyed.
Dating back 2,000 years, it held fortifications, towers, buildings,
stables and a mosque.
Bam is located on the old Silk Road route between China and Europe
used by merchants and travellers for centuries.
The quake struck when most residents were asleep. Earthquakes are a
regular occurrence in Iran, which is crossed by several major
faultlines.
British Geological Society spokesman Roger Musson says more
aftershocks are expected.
"The general rule is that the largest aftershock is expected to be on
magnitude less that the main shock," he said.
"Now about three hours after the main shock there was an aftershock of
a magnitude 5.4, so that was probably the principle one.
"So what is most likely now is [if] this earthquake follows normal
pattern is that we will have a declining number and declining strength
of aftershocks over the next few days."
In other developments:
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has committed Australia
to an initial $2 million in aid to Iran.
The international community has swung into action to provide relief
for Iran's earthquake victims, with rescue teams, medical supplies and
tracker dogs ready to move.

The International Red Cross (IRC) is preparing an appeal for about
$US8 million to help victims of the deadly earthquake that devastated
part of south-eastern Iran, a spokesman said.

The city of Bam has a long history. When the Mongols were sweeping
west from China, they came to Bam, which was then a very large city
in those days, with a population of over a million. It was a walled
city, heavily fortified.
The Khan's army approached, and told the leader of Bam to surrender
unconditionally, and they would be spared. Unfortunately, the leaders
made a bad decision, and told the Khan to ***** off.
After months of siege passed, the starving city leaders came out and
told the Khan they had changed their minds. "Just joking" was
probaby the tone.
So the Khan, being a generous man, said, "sure, live and let live,
we Mongols always say." and the leaders threw open the gates
to Bam.
Within one month, there were 40 pyramids made of human heads
in the city, 20 feet tall each. And they weren't Mongol heads.
The Khan left one man live, i.e.,- the leader of the city. And told
him
to get his ***** to the capitol of the Persian Empire, at that time
Rey, south of Tehran, also another major city in its day. The
leader of Bam told the people of Rey, Iran what happened,
and they didn't believe him
Within a few months, Rey, once a city of nearly 1.5 million people,
and the center of the Persian Empire at the time, was nothing more
than dust.

An earthquake has killed more than 20,000 people in Iran and injured
thousands more in the ancient Silk Road city of Bam.

Official numbers are STILL hovering at about 5,000.
Still a very large number, but nowhere near the 100,000, or even 15,000
that were and still are being claimed by some.

Something tells me that this event is a portent. I find it strange that the
destruction of the Citadel of Bam received only casual comment by the media.
This was, perhaps, the largest intact structure of its age. The citadel had just
been completed when Jesus Christ was born. He spoke of earthquakes in divers
places leading up to the end of the era. That this ancient building was a
fortress may imply further meaning such as the failing of the current great
powers. The American Catholic Church has had a great fall; this may be a
precursor of political, economic, and even military decline.

The Fall of Bam to the Mongols pre-saged the fall of the Persian
Empire, and the ushering in of the Mongol Empire.

I have read that a treasure of gold and jewels was recently found in
Afghanistan. Its existence was known by a number of people but it was hidden
for the past 2000 years.

It was hidden for 1,500 years, in low, a rat-infested dirt hill
known to the locals as 'the hill of gold'. Don't know why
no one bothered to dig it up sooner. May have been
cursed.

OK, i didn't know that. My info was that it was found in 1979 but was soon
locked in a vault due to hostilities. The Taliban figured they knew where it
was and tortured a few people for the combination but no luck. Now Karzai has
recovered it. The treasure was said to date from the time of Alexander the
Great.

22,000 as of Monday 29/12/3, but figures are still only preliminary,
of-course,
as the city is still covered in rubble.......it will probably be at
least another two weeks, at this rate, b4 the final death toll is
announced....
