In the presence of NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and other African-American
leaders, comedian Bill Cosby took aim at blacks who don't take responsibility
for their economic status, blame police for incarcerations and teach their kids
poor speaking habits.
Cosby made his remarks at a Constitution Hall event in Washington Monday night
commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision
that paved the way for integrated schools, reported Richard Leiby in his
Reliable Source column for the Washington Post.
Leiby said Cosby's remarks were met with "astonishment, laughter and applause."
When Cosby finally concluded, Leiby said, Mfume, Howard University President H.
Patrick Swygert and NAACP legal defense fund head Theodore Shaw came to the
podium looking "stone-faced."
Shaw told the crowd most people on welfare are not African American. He
insisted many of the problems his organization addresses among blacks are not
self-inflicted.
Cosby said, according to Leiby: "Ladies and gentlemen, the lower economic
people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not
parenting. They are buying things for kids – $500 sneakers for what? And
won't spend $200 for 'Hooked on Phonics.'
He added: "They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't
even talk the way these people talk: 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... And I
blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk.
.... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads.
.... You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth!"
The Post said Cosby also targeted imprisoned blacks.
"These are not political criminals," he said. "These are people going around
stealing Coca-Cola. People getting shot in the back of the head over a piece of
pound cake and then we run out and we are outraged, [saying] 'The cops
shouldn't have shot him.' What the hell was he doing with the pound cake in his
hand?"

Actually, blacks can communicate verbally faster and better than
whites on the street. Try rapping, any kind of English words, your
choice. Eminem is supposedly the best rapper and white. But blacks
seem like naturals at rapping.
If Cosby knew the truth, he would really seem racist. Blacks, pure
Native Americans including Native Alaskans, and Native Hawaiians
probably drop out of school earlier because they might not have the
genes to read that well (wasn't needed by their ancestors). Hispanic
kids and Asians have English problems, but can eventually learn to
read, write, and speak English well enough for white collar work
without Affirmative Action. That's my own theory; and probably seems
racist. Also there was some genetic engineering going on in the 1600's
and 1700's when slave owners bred slaves where the white man was fully
in control. I have debated this with Ken Hamblin (about the only black
man who hosts a national radio talk show, reading loads of news and
emails), who is a Caribbean black man with very African facial
features (unlike Condie and Colin Powell; who seem to have some
Caucasian facial features). He grew up in Bedford Stuy, and I grew up
in Spanish Harlem until I was 13 years old.
Looking at genes may decide what the truth is.

literate 100 years ago? 200 years ago? 500 years ago? What percentage
of people on the planet "needed" writing 1000 years ago? How quickly
do you think evolution works for a species like Homo Sapiens who take
20+ years between generations?
China is believed to have invented writing in the 2nd millenium BC.
The literacy rate in China is 86%, yet in Western Europe it's 99%.
China had a thousand+ years worth of "writing genes" advantage over
Europeans, yet the literacy rate is higher in Europe?

Canaanites were working on an alphabet. Possibly the Phoenicians'
alphabet preceded the Israelites.
It is believed in the "Documentary Hypothesis" that the Yawhist or J
source was written while Solomon was king of Israel.
Also Solomon supposedly had 300 wives and 700 concubines, so a lot of
his genes were passed along to the next generation...and on and on.
The upper class in Europe usually had a better chance of surviving
than the peasants, plus they were often schooled.
Did the Semitic people know something about writing and did it bring a
salary to read and write? Writing was discovered among the Sumerians
around 3000 BC. Before that there were probably glyphs of some kind,
perhaps petraglyphs. The Sumerians invented cuneiform writing to label
jars, vases, or other vessels carrying cargo. The first alphabet was
Canaanite, when symbols stood for sounds.
People who could read and write probably were subsidized, given a
salary, and kept out of some wars, to be the poets, chroniclers,

Including economic disadvantages for hispanic young people, who grew
up in poverty-stricken areas, but can overcome their reading
disabilities with time. I grew up in Spanish Harlem, and have a
reading disability (was worse when I was young). I attended an
elementary school in an IGC class (intellectually gifted) which had
about 14 blacks, 13 of whom had light skin. My father attended Oxford
U and spoke 5 languages fluently but read slowly. My mother spoke 3
languages fluently but read slowly. Most of my friends now read faster
than me though my SAT grades barely put me in Mensa territory.
It's a matter of genes, with me. My parents were slow readers.
With fMRI and genetic research; learning, memory, and genetic factors
will be sorted out. Although I bluffed my way through many courses in
high school, I was told I needed remedial reading. They tested me, and
found me to be a slow reader. They did nothing to improve my reading.
Years later I improved my reading skills; but at certain times, I have
trouble even now focusing when in a movie someone picks up a letter
and most of the people in the theater have read the writing on the
screen, while I would be trying to refocus my attention, and so I'd
miss half of the letter...Very embarrassing for me, and probably due
to some sort of ADD (attention deficit disorder).
When you learn the neuroscience of ADD, getting more beta waves in
areas of the brain when necessary; let me know. Attention and memory
is even to this day somewhat of a mystery to neuropsychologists and
neuroscientists. There have been some experiments with mice and NMDA
receptors in learning and memory, especially short-term memory. When
you have learned about the topic, inform the APA.

anyone who can read can learn anything to excel. Luckily he had good
reading skills, and overcame whatever was getting him C minuses in

Both Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln took to reading when they
new pretty much nothing about language. ML began to read the
dictionary page, by page; and AL began to read Law books under
candlelight. Both consider that time to be the periods they came out

There is no question that you need intelligence (which you are born
with or not) to read, and there is no question that people with low
mental abilities struggle with reading. Good parenting and motivation
can overcome a lot of that, though.

Why is it idiocy? You comparing dogs to people is idiocy. Dogs are
inbred to create purebreeds, and have an immense genetic variety in
the same species. It is not surprising that we have had a huge
influence on the collective gene pool. The difference between
different races of humans is very subtle compared to dogs. Skin
color, lactose intolerance, average height, types of hair, etc. -- not
very big differences.
Did you actually read the reference. The definition of literacy is in
BOLD (so that slow readers like yourself will catch it) right above
the table:

found me to be a slow reader. They did nothing to improve my reading.
There is no question that you need intelligence (which you are born
with or not) to read, and there is no question that people with low
mental abilities struggle with reading. Good parenting and motivation
can overcome a lot of that, though.
Of course. So? I was destined to be a slow reader (unless I am focused
and warmed up, which takes time for me). My parents sent me to the
best schools around. Raw intelligence isn't everything. First ADD must
be diagnosed. Then special ed would be necessary, even perhaps
biofeedback. If there was early intervention, perhaps new brain
connections could have made me an average reader in my youth. Instead,
I bluffed my way through my early English reading classes.
Even with my vast experience in reading, I continue to have
difficulties in shifting focus, for reading purposes, though I have
won national or collegiate accolades in sports and board games and
attended an Ivy League college, without Affirmative Action
considerations.
Show you no something about ADD, or I should ignore you. Saying

not saying much at all.

Why is it idiocy? You comparing dogs to people is idiocy. Dogs are
inbred to create purebreeds, and have an immense genetic variety in
the same species. It is not surprising that we have had a huge
influence on the collective gene pool. The difference between
different races of humans is very subtle compared to dogs. Skin
color, lactose intolerance, average height, types of hair, etc. -- not
very big differences.

proper effort a species can be changed.

Okay, the illiteracy rate for whites in 1979 was 0.4%, for blacks it
was 1.6%.
That's a much, much smaller gap than 99% and 86%. According to your
interpretation of statistics that is insignificant and your whole
grand theory falls apart.

Also it makes sense that when people buy and sell with money, some
reading skills would be necessary. It would be adaptive to manage
money properly, to provide more food and better living conditions for
one's family. With enough health care (from primitive medical experts
in olden days) and food and minerals, one might even survive plagues.
Getting paid the right amount for work, getting the most for one's
money would be adaptive in an evolutionary sense. Those who couldn't
manage money properly, would be vulnerable.

Blacks in the NBA can probably play better than any Japanese
basketball league team. There are physical differences between races.
Jimmy the Greek was wrong about blacks having stronger thighs (look at
the thighs of pro or Olympic speed skaters who are white), enabling
them to jump higher. He was fired by CBS and was relegated to
obscurity. But since then ESPN had some experts on who stated that
black men have slimmer hips than Caucasian men. Also they stated their
knee joints are different. Black athletes admit that there are more
pigeon-toed and bowlegged men percentage-wise among blacks than among
Caucasians.
Supposedly being pigeon-toed gives an advantage in running sprints. It
would not help skating though, so there probably aren't many black
hockey players in the NHL. These would be on average; there are
exceptions.
Also black men have an easier time of keeping fat off and maintaining
muscle mass in their bodies for athletic contests. That is evident in
pro boxing and basketball, even through age 35.

Limiting their options. If they can sing, dance, act (social skills),
play sports, or become an inventor or innovator; they can make a lot
of money. I looked for a bio of Billy Bob Thornton, and didn't see any
schooling. He's some kind of genius late-blooming actor-writer though.
I dunno much about Eminem's schooling either. Doesn't seem to be
Julliard-taught. He was a ninth grade drop out.
Talent sometimes elicits itself, whether the mom taught the kid to be
driven or not.
I hear "I ain't got", "I don't got", and the like from the, um, less affluent
people in my area. (Rural, very white).
They could try country music singing, or gospel rock. Down South, they
could self-teach themselves to read the Bible and preach (probably not

They aren't working just fine and dandy. The teachers' unions that are there to
represent the best interest of the *teachers*, and while they may say that
they're there for the kids, we all know that unions are there for their
membership, and nobody else.
Does anyone outside of a teachers' union really think that the "best" teachers
should have a masters degree in education rather than demonstrating they can
actually understand the material they're teaching? Nope, didn't think so!

anything doesn't make someone else's words racist. There is no racism
at all. It is a legitimate news article ( i.e. fact). Ever cross your
little brain that Cosby maybe a tad concerned that many blacks are
factually illiterate? So he was just pointing it out? ...In a venue
that he has extreme talent for.
