JERUSALEM (AFP) - Israel lashed out at the "hypocrisy" of the
international community and UN Security Council over its threats to
expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat (news - web sites), but vowed
it would not give in to the criticism.

"When it comes to defending a terrorist like Yasser Arafat the world
mobilises, but when women and children are killed in the streets of
Israel, the UN Security Council is silent -- it's hypocrisy," a senior
Israeli official told AFP on condition of anonymity Saturday.
"Despite this unjustified criticism, Israel will not modify the
decision taken in principle Thursday by the security cabinet to remove
Yasser Arafat at an opportune moment," he said.
The diplomatic crisis was sparked after two Palestinian suicide
bombings on Tuesday left 15 Israelis dead.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites), who cut short
a trip to India, convened a meeting of his security cabinet Friday
which branded Arafat an "obstacle" to peace and decided it would
"remove this obstacle in a manner and at a time which will be decided
afterwards."
Government sources said it had effectively granted the army a green
light to expel Arafat when it saw fit.
The announcement sparked a spontaneous outpouring of support for the
74-year-old Palestinian leader as thousands of his people took to the
streets of the West Bank and Gaza Strip (news - web sites). Arafat
also vowed he would never be taken alive.
"No one can kick me out. They can kill me with bombs but I will not
leave," said Arafat, who made a triumphant return to the Palestinian
territories in 1994 on the strength of the Oslo peace accords the year
before.
Palestinian militant groups warned Israel it would unleash a "volcano
of anger" if it carried out its threat to remove him.
But the United States, European Union (news - web sites) and Russia
also all warned Israel against moving to put Arafat into a new exile
from his battered West Bank base.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) telephoned
Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom as well as Palestinian foreign
minister Nabil Shaath, European Union foreign policy chief Javier
Solana and Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Muasher, officials said.
"Our views on this matter are very well known to the Israeli
government." said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.
"We don't view that it would help matters and it would only serve to
give him a broader stage."
In Geneva, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) said
Israel would be "unwise" to banish Arafat. "We have already seen the
implications and I hope the government will not apply the decision
which it has taken in principle."
The European Union also said it would maintain contacts with Arafat
wherever he is based.
Analysts and diplomats alike also agreed that deporting the
Palestinian leader, or killing him -- as one Israeli newspaper called
for recently -- would spell the end of the Oslo peace process.
However, the Israeli official played down any rift with the country's
main ally the United States, which also accuses Arafat of turning a
blind eye to the attacks on Israel by militant groups which it says
undermines attempts to bring peace.
"US opposition is different from that of other countries because the
United States is an ally of Israel," he said.
In a related development, Palestinian negotiations minister Saeb
Erakat was meeting with US special envoy John Wolf on Saturday in the
West Bank city of Jericho to discuss the Israeli threat.
The UN Security Council was due Monday to debate an Arab resolution
designed to force the Jewish State to take back its decision.
On the ground, an elderly Palestinian was killed after he was hit by a
bullet during clashes between troops and Palestinian gunmen in the
northern West Bank town of Nablus.
Palestinian hospital sources said Fathi Bulbul was shot as he watched
Israeli troops raid Nablus' Old City from the window of his room.
And Israeli police operating in occupied and annexed east Jerusalem
discovered and destroyed three suicide belts destined to be used in
anti-Israeli attacks, military sources said.
Israeli police sappers operating in occupied and annexed east
Jerusalem destroyed three explosive belts which were due to be used in
suicide attacks, military sources said.
The belts were hidden inside a washing machine in al-Azzariyeh village
on the Mount of Olives, just east of Jerusalem's Old City, they said.
They were discovered following information provided by several Hamas
activists arrested over the last few days.

I second that motion!!
No need, excuses were accepted.

The U.S. government accepted the explanation of the Israeli government
concerning the identification error. The loss of thirty-four men was the
largest loss of life in a single event in American cryptologic history.
It occurred, ironically, during a war in which the United States was not
a participant.

NOW, will you give it up?

Erm..NO?! Israel is currently the biggest recipient of US foreign aid
at US$5 Billion + ( Afghanistan & Iraq aren't 'foreign aid' & yet
Israel still gets more than the flattened Afghanistan! ) A First World
country getting more than any Third World country. So the excuses were
accepted by their closest allie, a VERY forgiving allie, what a
surprise!
The Liberty was attacked for a strangely long time, all countries that
investigated the incident found this so. & are you one of these people
that claim anything critical of Israel is anti-Semitism?! If so please
get your head out of your arse & realise the difference between
Judaism & the Zionist agenda. Most American Jews are AGAINST Israels
occupation of Palestine ( approx. 60%+ ) but we won't hear that side
of the arguement in the media!

Disgraceful waste of US taxpayers hard-earned money.....
Oh well, the Sepps are throwing their *own* money down the proverbial plughole...
