WILDFIRES sparked a state of emergency and mass evacuations across
California yesterday.
One person was killed in blazes that forced Hollywood stars to flee
their multi-million-dollar homes.
Flames destroyed a Malibu church, which had been evacuated during
morning services, and several homes, including a $19 million hilltop
castle.
Australian singer Olivia Newton-John's Malibu home was among those
evacuated.
Actor Mel Gibson's home also came under threat.
A wall of flame raced to the perimeter of the gated estate where the
two have multi-million-dollar homes. However firefighters stopped the
blaze from spreading into the compound.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared the emergency in seven of the
state's southern counties as firefighters battled the blazes, which
started in the early morning and burned all day, fanned by strong
wind.
More than 12,000ha burned.
One person died fighting a fire near San Diego, and at least 11 were
injured elsewhere.
Authorities ordered 36,000 residents of Ramona, 50km northeast of San
Diego, to leave.
Fast-moving flames devoured tree-lined hillsides and filled the Malibu
area with thick smoke.
The blaze destroyed much of the Malibu's Castle Kashan, a stately
fortress-like home with turrets and arched windows, built in 1978 and
put up for sale in March for more than $19 million.
Chunks of brick fell from the exterior of the burning building, an eye-
catching landmark on the hill above Malibu's boutique shopping
centre.
The flames forced thousands to evacuate, including entire
neighbourhoods in the exclusive seaside town of Malibu, about 30km
west of Los Angeles.
Malibu, which stretches along 44km of the Pacific coastline, is home
to about 13,000 people, including celebrities Pierce Brosnan, Jennifer
Aniston, Matthew McConaughey, Sting, Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand,
Cher and Richard Gere, and blockbuster director James Cameron.
The celebrity website TMZ.com said Cameron's house was among those
evacuated.
The community is also home to about 25 rehabilitation centres,
including the Summit Centre, the mountain-top drug rehab unit former
West Coast Eagles star Ben Cousins was expected to check into this
week for treatment.
The centre was under threat from flames yesterday, with authorities
closing the winding canyon road to traffic.
"There's no clear direction of the fire. You're getting erratic winds
and swirls," fire inspector Ron Haralson said.
"We're getting gusts up to 60 miles (100km/h) an hour . . . They die
down for a little bit. But then we're getting spot fires, fires that
start well ahead of the main body of the fire, embers landing on
rooftops and trees."
Thousands of students at Pepperdine University were evacuated.
Nearby, the Malibu Presbyterian Church was razed, along with several
houses, and the coastal highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco was
cut off.
Los Angeles County fire chief Michael Freeman said at least three
homes and two commercial buildings were destroyed and nine houses were
damaged.
He said the fire was expected to burn for two to three days.
"There will literally be thousands of homes that will be threatened,"
he said.
Authorities said downed power lines were believed to have started the
blaze, which was being fought by fire crews on the ground and by
aircraft.
