Total fire ban statewide. Bushfire hotline 1800 240 667
URGENT THREAT Fernbank, Glenaladale, Kevington, Gaffneys Creek, A1 Mine
and Woods Point. Jamieson district, including Burns Bridge.
ON ALERT North East: Howqua River Road area, Mount Beauty and Bogong
townships. Gippsland: Glencairn, areas north of Valencia Creek and east
to Culloden, Castleburn, Dargo, Briagolong and Crooked River.
NEWS UPDATE Houses threatened and two schools evacuated at Drysdale,
near Geelong.
Horror fire conditions have seen fires rage out of control this
afternoon, jumping containment lines and launching ember attacks at
populated areas.
"We've got severe spotting activity ahead of the fire front which is
impacting on a number of towns to the east and south of these fire
areas,'' CFA deputy chief officer Graham Fountain told theage.com.au.
"The fires have jumped containment lines, they've spotted, there's been
ember attacks in a number of areas.
"There is a risk of that (buildings being lost), these are populated
areas.''
Just before noon a separate fire threatened homes in Drysdale.
"The fire at Drysdale near Geelong on the Bellarine Peninsula earlier
ran swiftly towards houses and threatened a range of houses and caused
the evacuation of two schools.''
Mr Fountain said the CFA had to deploy increased resources from outer
metropolitan areas.
"We've still got 40 kilometre winds behind this pre-frontal trough
before the change so we've got a long night ahead of us with strong
winds still prior to it dieing down and giving us some respite for a
few days.''
Fires have jumped containment lines and running towards the towns of
Briagolong, Licola and Seaton.
A new fire at Cooper's Creek in Gippsland is threatening Tyers,
Toongabbie and Cowwarr and fires north of Dargo are causing concern,
Concern also exists around Glencairn, A1 Settlement, and Woods Point.
'Everyone's really scared'
The scene over Gippsland has been described as like Armageddon by one
resident as the fires move in.
Les White in Sale said there was an eerie feeling in town.
"It's unbelievable I've never seen anything like it in my life,'' he
said.
"It's like dead black, like night here, the street light just came on
in front of me. There's burnt leaves and ash falling from the sky -
it's just like Armageddon.
"I feel like I'm in the eye of a cyclone. People have gone home to
defend their homes. People everywhere are talking about it on the
streets, everyone's really scared ...''
Towns under threat
Residents in Fernbank, Glenaladale, Kevington, Licola, Gaffney's Creek
and A1 Mine have been issued with urgent threat messages, while those
in Merrijig , Mt Buller, Sawmill Settlement and Woods Point are being
urged to remain alert.
The towns of Dargo, Crooked River, Castleburn, Waterford and Cobbannah
that may come under threat as winds shift north to north-easterly.
Glenmaggie, Valencia Creek, Briagalong and Heyfield are advised to
remain on high alert with the expected northerly wind change.
The CFA and Department of Sustainability and Environment are holding
community meetings today at: Council Reserve, Willow Lake Drive, Mac's
Cove, from 4pm; and Jamieson Public Hall, Jamieson, from 5pm.
Containment lines reinforced
Firefighters worked through the night to reinforce containment lines in
preparation for extreme bushfire conditions expected today.
Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman Kevin Monk said
firefighters had done all they possibly could.
"I think we could always do with more time and even conditions to do
backburning but I think we've known this day has been coming ... and I
think the crucial work has been done," Mr Monk said.
"I think they're (the conditions) not as extreme as they were on the
weekend but the strong winds are always a concern to us, there'll be
spotting embers in a lot of communities right around these fires."
More than 4000 firefighters are working to protect property and stop
the fires' spread.
Tasmanian fire destroys house
One house and several sheds have been destroyed by a fire raging
through towns on Tasmania's east coast.
Residents of Four Mile Creek were advised to evacuate to the beach as
the St Marys - Scamander fire advanced upon the town faster than
expected because of strong wind gusts.
Danny Reid from the Tasmania Fire Service told theage.com.au that an
unoccupied house and several sheds had been destroyed in the small,
coastal holiday spot.
Those who had planned to stay and defend their homes were advised to
stick to their plans, but those who wanted to leave were advised to
head for the beach.
"When the fire hit Four Mile Creek it came in a rush and it was too
late for people to get out by road," said Mr Reid.
Earlier the fire went through the nearby town of Cornwall.
Fire rushed the village just after 1pm after a predicted westerly wind
change took hold.
An ABC reporter in Cornwall said firefighters had managed to save three
or four homes in the path of "a great wall of fire''.
"They just stood in the flames with hoses and not a lot more,'' she
said.
Meanwhile, a major bushfire broke containment lines overnight and is
threatening properties in rugged high country near Tumut, in southern
NSW.
With a total fire ban in force over much of the state, authorities say
the blaze burning out of control 30km north-east of Tumut, is igniting
spot fires ahead of its front.
Extra fire fighting resources have been rushed to the area with
conditions expected to worsen during the day.

Title: Smoke on the water... (Deep Purple) Re: IT'Z JUST LIKE ARMAGEDDON 16 Dec 2006 01:54:55 AM
Not quite... What if the fire has already burnt ressources?
What if, as I have said for years, that due to the lack of concern for
alternative energy 30 years ago (worse in fact, sanctioned targetted
assassination of promoters of alternative energy, but that is another
story), water inundating the planet,
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6179409.stm due to the melting of
the poles (6,5), will cause unprecendented havoc, shortage of territories,
spreading flood (2,17 - 3,12 - 8,16 - 8,91 - 9,37 - 10,6) and epidemy
(9,55 - 9,91 - etc.)? There is no putting back the ice on the planet's caps
within a couple of centuries you know... And what if all that is preceeding
or following severe upcoming oil shortage crashing the economy to oblivion
(2,75 - 3,5 - 8,17 - 8,28)? See http://www.oilcrashmovie.com/film.html .
But even then, this would still be just a crisis, an unprecendented crisis,
oil being the basis of virtually everything not organic, but what if this is
only the beginning? The fact is that the situation has changed politically,
and we have a couple of hundred quatrains that speak of the war that will
follow against Islam, which is waiting only for something like this to take
advantage the opportunity...? (I won't enumerate them, they can be found at
http://www.michelnostradamus.org/quatrainsfuture.html under the caption
'war of the future'.)
But even that (i.e. WWIII, which you are so found of) won't be the real
Armageddon yet, it will feel like it surely, but this ultimate 'Armageddon'
battle between Go[o]d and [d]Evil will occur a lot later (centuries from
now, even the first AC is in the future), and this infamous chapter of
apocalypse preceding the millenium of peace will be about the one who'll
take over the 3rd AC... but again, that is another story.
Anyway, bushfires happen all the time, and indeed can have devastating
impact, we have seen that in California a few years back, AND, INDEED they
may be worse in frequency of magnitude because of global warming... but that
is nothing, really, compared to what is coming, as now, there is a way to
deal with these... over time. We will likely see this real upcoming
nightmare slowly but inexorably take shape over the years, unlike bush
fires...
Best wishes of good courage and good luck to you and your fellow Victorians
(city and state), Wally.
(Best wishes to all as well for the Christmas holidays if I don't have the
opportunity to say it later.)
