In "The Last Temptation of Christ" Willem Dafoe, playing Jesus, was a
reluctant Messiah who, while on the cross, had a time-warp trip into the
future with a lil' angel girl, screwed Mary Magdelene, got her pregnant
(but she died with the baby), grew old and almost died...then journeyed
back to the cross, a changed man who then wanted to be a Messiah.
Christians laid ***** and ***** trails for months over that script's
speculative portions.
Yet, as I recently finished watching the movie again yesterday, it made me
aware once more about just how many things we certainly don't know about
Jesus' life, or the apostles' lives.
If we could truthfully fill in all the blanks, would he still be the
divine icon he has been, and still is, today? Why is it that we must deify
a human being? Can we not simply accept the mystery of our existence and
move on? What is all this hand-wringing about the divine origins of this
species, and what would change every day if we really had the truth we
seek? IMO, nothing much at all, but a new self-realization. Yet, could
that be applied to change our species' negative behaviour? I really have
doubts it'd result in any sea-change, but some would undoubtedly benefit
more than others.

I think it was a way of tearing a hole in peoples' hearts in
a way people could understand and relate to. Nothing god could
have said, no other sign or message, could have the same impact
on human emotion as a friend and teacher living among them for
several years and then being sacrificed for their own eternal
soul. I'm sure it was quite heart-wrenching for those who knew
Christ personally, as it is for most other people who hear that
story.
The bible is filled with simple messages presented in a way that
simple, uneducated people can understand. The entire old testament
is like a guidebook on how to live a moral and ethical life (as well
as being something of a history book).

Some concepts don't require any formal education to be easily understood.
Life experience and human instinct are two classrooms where the 'tests'
are far more relevant and important. If the Bible and the other tracts of
the world's major religions never existed, humans would still learn the
basic truths about themselves. And that is why I seriously question why
any supposedly superintelligent deity that created us would've allowed
such a destructive biped to reign supreme on the planet for millenia. Or
would've included a future scenario of great hatred and bloodletting,
singling out certain portions of it's human creation as the culprits,
thereby prejudicing the larger part of his creation against that portion
for millenia. Either we've been lied to about our origin and importance
in the cosmos, or have an incomplete comprehension of the our existence
(possibly due to 'mentally ill' purveyors), or that allegedly wise,
'perfect' deity is seriously flawed or has evil in it (like it's human
creation).
And that is why I think those who believe in religions' philisophies are
inherently dangerous, and evil, or at least are part of a reckless,
ignorant force that mirrors political fascism. Daniel Min may be the
running joke of the usenet, but his seething hatred and virulent
self-delusions are the stuff that human evil springs from, feeds on, and
grows from...especially in times of great hysteria prompted by
unprecedented crises. (And we've already seen many examples of this over
the millenia. I believe we are the midst of one of the worst of those
horrid periods.)

I think you give many other people too much credit doc. Today we have
the benefit of 5000 years of history and widely available education,
but 3000 years ago the vast majority of people were illiterate and
NEVER travelled outside their little hamlet for their entire lives.
A book like the old testament was essential to teach people how to
socialize, and how to live moral and ethical lives.
There were learned individuals in these populations though, just not
very many.
And that is why I seriously question why
any supposedly superintelligent deity that created us would've allowed

I never said a super-intelligent being created everything. Personally
I think it is just as possible the whole mess came about by accident.

No argument from me here. Religious nuts live by a very different set
of priorities than most people do, and I'm sure there are varying degrees
of religious nutitude (is that even a word ?).. religious nutdom..
religious nutness.. religious nuttiness.. ah well.
In the extreme cases of religious kookosity, you get individuals
who are just plain dangerous to be around, you know, islamic suicide
bombers, christian fanatics like stevie who start wars of agression,
because for these people life and death is far less important than
their belief system.

Yeah, when the nuts take over, then rational people can only go into
damage control mode.
