I added my name to the list, for what it's worth.
Despite my fervent desire to see Cheney and Bush sent to criminal court, my
intuitive feeling is that the system, the culture, has become so morally
corrupted by political and corporate greed and self-centeredness, and an
increasingly fierce sick competition, that we'd be better served by having
an indictment of, a reckoning for, the entire nation. Impeachment removed
Nixon, only to have him pardoned, and Iran-Contra and now Bush-IraqGate
follow (not to mention numerous lesser corruptive political situations).
I know we have to *start somewhere*, and doing nothing invites certain ruin
for our faultering civilization, but massive moral indignation and legal
action sparked back in 1974 has unfortunately not led to a cleaner morality
in political leadership. The meddling corporate world continues to slip and
slide like greased pigs in its own suffocating world of lies, war promotion,
greed, and immorality/amorality. And it's a bloodsucking octopus that
greatly influences the political realm every day, through its poisoned
tentacles, the news entertainment industry (and corporate-sucking political
whores). Pious fanatics, too, continue to have undue influence on public
officials and various social policies, restricting our rights and making
everyday life more strained.
Adding my name to any resistance against this deteriorating cultural milieu
is, at once, a depressing recognition that my raging indignation over innate
human misbehaviour reaches far beyond America's two corrupted political
parties, the ***** exploitative media, or the largely apathetic
consumption-crazed masses (mired in trivial pursuits).
Yet...I feel it's necessary to make a stand, however ineffectual or small,
against what I know is a civilization heading for social/political
dissolution -- whether in my lifetime or not.
I don't want to go to my grave thinking I'd let this goddamned depressing
mess keep me from making a morally conscientious stand against it, even if
it all tanks anyway. That is what my generation was taught by the resistance
to racial intolerance, a useless war, environmental damage, corruption, et
al -- to vote our conscience and stand against what we know to be wrong, and
advocate all that we know to be right...no matter how grim it looks for a
resolution.
Since I can't control the world, nor wish to, all I can do is to speak out
against the wrongness of human behaviour in leadership, and act, or vote,
where possible to punish it, or get rid of it.
It's a one-step-forward, two-steps-back struggle that has been going on long
before America was created, and it will very likely continue even "...unto
the end of the world."
What I see in America today is a whole lot of rising cynicism,
conspiratorial intrigues, general rage, and self-serving behaviour that
generates much sarcastic humor and entertainment, and certainly tremendous
complaining, but has eerily, depressingly, not resulted in doing the
necessary things to correct what ails us.
Congress has not acted on a mandate by the people last November to end the
Iraq War, nor has the impeachment movement yet garnered majority public
support or even significant bipartisan support in Congress.
It's a curious scene in America these days: obsessions about inappropriate
public language and sexual liasons, tabloid-esque murder stories, celeb
meltdowns, terrorist hysteria, etc, have apparently taken priority over
ending a disastrous, humanly costly, immoral, unnecessary war, and punishing
or removing those scoundrels who ignited it, lied, and twisted intel to get
into it.
Polls show a public fucking fed up with leaders and the war, and yet this
hasn't translated into correcting either mess.
And to make matters even more sickening, we still have many ignorant
fanatical hangers-on to the Bush surreality who lie and manipulate,
arrogantly defend these monsters, yet live like curiously satisfied pigs
every day while oinking in protest about those who protest as folks who
"don't love America" should "live elsewhere."
Hollywood needs to remake "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" into a general
social indictment of America's socio-political landscape today.

I'd like to think they're more interested in persuing their strategic
aims rather than simply staying in power. I don't know if they're
ready to scrap the constitution and take control via martial law or

It is indeed scary out there, Wally, on a number of different levels.
7 years ago I never would have thought that 1 man as President of the
United States could do so much damage to a country with a long, strong
225 year history.
It could conceivably go up just as you say. It's always possible that
something can come along and alter things for the better or in another
direction.
I just see the damage these people have done and become sad and a bit
angry about it. How could we have placed so much trust in such a
bungling bunch of idiots?
