The Portuguese military has forced two decrepit, contaminated US warships to
leave Portugal's territorial waters. The ships are currently being
transported from the United States to the British port of Hartlepool, where
they were due to be dismantled. However, the British authorities have
withdrawn permission for the dismantling operation due to safety concerns.
The ships in question are contaminated with asbestos, heavy diesel and other
toxic chemicals. Portugal said a tug towing the two ships strayed six miles
inside Portuguese waters last night close to the Azores Islands. A navy
vessel that patrols the Azores were sent out to confront the tug and order
it to leave Portuguese territory.
