KEY WEST, Fla. - A troupe of female impersonators raised more than
$15,000 for victims of Hurricane Charley at a dance club.
The unusual fund-raiser, staged at Club Aqua in Key West on Saturday,
was dubbed "Charley's Angels" and attracted about 250 patrons who anted
up bucks for donated jewelry, guest-house stays and dinners between
performances given by a dozen drag queens.
Roger Altman, who portrays "Inga," a seven-foot tall blonde Swede,
conceived the charity event and encouraged all performers to donate
their gratuities to the cause.
"Traditionally, Saturday night is when they (female impersonators) make
their money to pay living expenses," said Steve Smith of the Key West
Business Guild, which helped organize the event.
"Their generosity is indicative of many Florida Keys residents who are
extremely grateful to have been spared the wrath of Charley," Smith
said.
