President Mohammad could be shaped in indigenous national values and
interest underpinned by establishing democratic systems and respect for
people.
However, the president added, the protagonists of the Greater Middle East
Initiative are deceitful. According to the Presidential Press Affairs
Office, in the meeting with Lebanese Foreign Minister Jean Obeid,
President Khatami said the designers of the project are after garnering
hegemonic powers over the sensitive region and establishing a pivotal role
for the Israel as a socia l and political model, "however, the initiative
could be assimilated with indigenous values," he stated.
Khatami referred to the prerequisite of the greater Middle East as
establishment of democratic systems. "The Islam which we are following and
defending binds us to such a vision of society," he underlined.
There are two visions of Islam, one which propagates only violence and is
after imposing its twisted illusions on others and sacrifice the spirit of
Islam for superficialities shaped through the history, the president
added.
The second vision which stresses unity of all religions as espoused by
Imam Khomeini, the president said, adding "such a view, while emphasizing
spirituality and oneness of God also calls for freedom for human beings
and progress for nations in all areas."
"The religious-based government has to be in concord with human freedoms
and democracy and all the non-Moslems should also enjoy dignity and
respect in the society."
Although, this manner of thinking has many proponents, it is hindered by
obstacles in its execution, but the Moslem world, notably the youth, as
well as the body of Arab nations and the third world are all for this
vision, the president said.
