Kids in crash had no belts

FIVE children were among 14 people injured yesterday in a seven-car
pile up in Melbourne's west.
Four of the five children, including two babies, in the car that
allegedly caused the pile-up were not in appropriate child restraints
or seat belts.
A seven-year-old had no seat belt on, a mother was holding her eight-
month-old baby on her lap and its twin was asleep on the floor, said
Sgt Mark Rose of Werribee police.
The accident happened about 11.15am on Hopkins Rd at Truganina,
between Boundary and Greigs roads.
Vehicles were hit up to 100m from the initial impact, coming to rest
on the road or in paddocks in the rural area near Tarneit.
Sgt Rose said the scene was "sheer pandemonium" and he was surprised
no one had died.
A car driven by a male aged in his 30s drifted across Hopkins Rd into
a stream of six cars travelling north, he said.
"The first driver has seen him coming and avoided him, the second car
has seen him, swerved and rolled the car into the paddock.
"The third has locked their brakes and driven into a paddock, as did
the fourth.
"The offending vehicle has then had a head-on with the fifth car, who
had no chance of seeing it, and the sixth ran into the back of them."
Fifteen Metropolitan Ambulance crews, the Country Fire Authority, the
ambulance helicopter and police attended.
The air ambulance took the driver of the offending vehicle to the
Alfred hospital with life-threatening chest injuries.
The man went into cardiac arrest, but paramedics saved his life.
Four of the five children in the vehicle were unrestrained, Sgt Rose
said.
"A seven-year-old had no seat belt on, mum was in the rear holding an
eight-month-old, that child's twin was asleep on the floor, (there
was) a three-year-old in a baby seat and a five-year-old in another
part of the car.
"It is stupidity. How can you not have children restrained in a car?"
The children, who had bruising and cuts, were taken to the Royal
Children's Hospital.
Their mother was taken to the Alfred with serious injuries.
Seven people were taken to the Western Hospital and the Royal
Melbourne Hospital in stable conditions with various arm, chest and
facial injuries.
"(With) the amount of damage involved in this, I just don't know how
we didn't have fatalities at the scene . . . I'm extremely surprised,"
Sgt Rose said.
He commended motorists and witnesses who stopped to help.
Hopkins Rd was closed for more than five hours while debris was
cleared.
