French government setting up video screens to make it easier to watch ritual

It's not "Survivor" or "Joe Millionaire," but the newest reality TV show is
hoping to score viewers of the Islamic faith.
Muslims living in the Paris suburb of Evry are getting some help from the
government with the slaughter of sheep during the festival Eid this year.
A local meat wholesaler came up with the idea to televise the ritual slaughter
and video screens are being set up in a local slaughterhouse to make the event
easier to watch, according to a report in the Arab News.
''If the idea succeeds this year then it's likely to become a permanent fixture
of Eids in the future,'' a municipal spokesman said.
Meanwhile, officials in the town of Le Mans, west of Paris, plan to build a
permanent structure in which to kill sheep belonging to local Muslims.
An official tells the Arab News: ''If this works out, then it's an idea that
will probably be tried elsewhere in France.''
Strict government regulations on the slaughter of animals have made it
difficult for French Muslims to kill their sheep under religiously-authorized
conditions, according to the report.
However, some 110,000 sheep will be killed during the festival this year, so
the government decided it was time to introduce new ways to slaughter them
under more secure and hygienic conditions.
