Hmmm, some of those countries, including my own (unfortunately) are as bad
or worse than the US on a per-capita basis. Canada will not live up to
Kyoto and may even opt out when it is renewed in 2012 (see the article I
posted here earlier). However, something better than Kyoto needs to be
drawn up, as it is deeply flawed.

Agreed, but it is at least a starting point, and nations can show their
commitment to reduced emission by at least joining the discussion. The main
reason it is flawed is that Bush's government have not only decided to
ignore it, but are undoing the little good it has done
I agree with the Professor's analysis that it is a greater threat than the
eseentally invented threat of terrorism though.

True. But, once the oil peak has past, and the American economy
crumbles, that GDP will start falling like a stone. Of course, it will
fall in all the other nations as well. Luckily, here in Canada, about
70% of electricity is produced from non-thermal (non oil, gas, coal)
methods. We may be able to continue producing stuff after your lights
have gone out.
In 20-30 years, USA will be similar to a current 3rd world nation, with
nicer houses, and where almost everybody is armed.
Overall, the best odds for survival of the next few decades goes to
Australia and Canada. Large enough agricultural base, and small enough
population. Perhaps also Brazil and Argentina. The main flaw with
Canada will be that USA is the main trading partner.

Why? You yanks are responsible for something like 25% of the pollution
and you are 13% of the world's population. It's not the Chinese nor is

We've got a lot of companies in developing countries who are polluting
horribly.

Each country needs to clamp down on polluters within their own borders.
Unfortunately, developing nations are often so desperate for the
money from US corporations, that they sell their souls to them. And,
I'm afraid our federal government is little better - our worst polluters
in the US have Bush in their back pocket. :-(

China hasn't learned about mass transit and recycling yet (give
them a few years). It could get worse before it gets better. One
thing for sure... you don't want to be down-wind of Beijing at
this point in time.
