KOSOVO: NEW THREAT FROM SHADY PARAMILITARY GROUP
Pristina, 2 Nov. (AKI) - A mysterious paramilitary group calling itself
the Army for the Independence of Kosovo (AIK) on Wednesday issued a new
threat to Kosovo's ethnic Albanian politicians, saying they would face
a "difficult period" unless they proclaimed the independence of the
province, which has been under United Nations administration since
1999.
"If members of parliament don't behave in accordance with the
mandate they got from the voters, they would face a very difficult
period", AIK said in a statement signed by 'Commander Luigi"'
distributed to the provincial capital, Pristina's electronic media. UN
officials in Pristina acknowledged in October that armed gangs had been
spotted in western Kosovo, but played down their importance, saying
these were small groups that had non support from the local population.
Significantly, AIK's latest threat coincided with the Washington
meeting of a six-nation Contact Group for Kosovo, which should kick off
the talks on the final status of Kosovo, whose majority ethnic
Albanians demand independence.
Kosovo ethnic Albanian leaders have said there are two draft
resolutions circulating in parliament, and promised to put it to a vote
before November 14, as soon as a consensus was reached on the final
text version.
AIK also warned members of the ethnic Albanian negotiating team in the
talks on Kosovo's final status not to betray the majority of Albanians'
wish for independence. "AIK is following the work of the negotiating
team very closely," the statement said. "In order to move things
forward, we have engaged five of our units," the statement said,
warning that AIK could "strike at irresponsible politicians".
Belgrade opposes Kosovo's independence, favouring greater autonomy for
ethnic Albanians and local self-rule for the estimated 100,000 Serbs
who still live in the province. But ethnic Albanian leaders are
unanimous in saying they would accept nothing short of independence.
AIK has made several previous threats, including an open letter to
Kosovo's online media last month, warning that it would proclaim an
"emergency situation and start appying war rules" unless Kosovo's
parliament proclaimed independence by 15 October - something which did
not happen.
