Fears for thousands as tsunami toll mounts

Aid authorities in Indonesia believe the death toll in the province of
Aceh could still be tens of thousands higher that the current estimate
of 32,000.
Grave fears are held for the 100,000 people who live on the west coast,
while the overall toll throughout Asia is already more than 68,000.
All along the east coast of Aceh communities are burying their dead,
abandoning the usual funeral rites for a mass burial.
At least 32,000 people are estimated to have died, but tens of
thousands more remain unaccounted for in western Aceh, which bore the
brunt of Sunday's tsunami.
Aid agencies say it is now a race against time to get desperately
needed food and medical supplies to the region before thousands more
begin dying of disease.
Four Australian Hercules aircraft have today joined the massive
international effort to distribute aid to the tens of thousands of
survivors.
Banda Aceh
Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla says an estimated 5 per cent of
the 300,000 population of the Aceh's provincial capital, Banda Aceh,
had died.
"Today our estimation is around 30,000-40,000 dead. Aceh's population
is about 4.5 million with 300,000 in Banda Aceh," Mr Kalla told
diplomats at a meeting.
"Maybe 5 per cent of Banda Aceh's population is dead, or maybe more,"
he said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono spoke of "frightening reports" from
outlying parts of Aceh province, on the northern tip of Sumatra island,
which was closest to the quake's epicentre.
The stench of decomposing corpses spread over Banda Aceh, and fresh
water, food and fuel were running short. Many in the city feared fresh
quakes and tsunamis, and roads were filled with people trying to leave.
"We haven't eaten for two days. We have to get out of here," said
Irawan, 35, whose optician's practice was destroyed.
Bodies lay scattered on the streets. Soldiers and volunteers were
collecting corpses for mass burial to prevent disease.
One of the worst hit cities was Meulaboh, about 150 kilometres from the
quake's epicentre. The mayor, Tengku Zulkarnaen, said three-quarters of
his city had been washed away.
The first ship dispatched to a stretch of obliterated coastline on
Sumatra in Indonesia has arrived to deliver emergency aid to earthquake
and tsunami victims.
A navy spokesman says a warship has docked at Meulaboh, where the death
toll is reported to be 10,000.
An Indonesian Social Affairs ministry official says the ship carried
only food and bottled drinking water.
Aid agencies on the ground are struggling to reach Meulaboh because of
blocked roads, collapsed bridges and a lack of fuel and transport in
the province.
India
The death toll in India has topped 9,000 with many thousands of people
still missing, officials said.
The death toll of 9,233 includes 4,000 in the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands, close to the epicentre of the Indonesian earthquake that
produced the tsunamis, and another 4,500 in the southern Indian state
of Tamil Nadu.
Police on the Andamans say at least 3,000 people are missing and admit
they still do not have any reports from numerous remote islands.
India's Home Minister Shivraj Patil admitted the nationwide death toll
was difficult to estimate.
"If you look at the number of missing people, it is huge," he said.
The Government has taken a cautious stance and Indian Defence Minister
Pranab Mukherjee said Tuesday night the death toll as officially
confirmed to the federal government in New Delhi was 4,857.
An estimated 160,000 Indians have been left homeless along the mainland
coast.
UNICEF executive director Carol Bellamy said children could account for
up to a third of the total number of dead.
Disease
Disease could kill as many people as those killed by the wall of water,
a top World Health Organisation (WHO) official said.
"There is certainly a chance that we could have as many dying from
communicable diseases as from the tsunami," the WHO's Dr David Nabarro
told a news conference.
Gerhard Berz, a top risk researcher at Munich Re, the world's largest
reinsurer, estimated the economic cost of the devastation at more than
$13 billion.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell said the international community may
have to give billions of dollars in aid.
The United States more than doubled its pledge to $35 million.
Australia increased its aid to $27 million and said it, the United
States, Japan and India were considering setting up a core group to
coordinate help.
