LCBO reaches tentative deal

It seems Ontario residents have been busily squirreling away emergency
stockpiles of alcohol for nothing.
Management of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario – the world's largest
purchaser of alcohol – announced Wednesday that a tentative agreement
has been reached with its unionized employees, averting the possibility
of a Thursday strike at LCBO stores and warehouses across the province.
Terms of the new collective bargaining agreement are being kept secret
pending ratification by members of the liquor board employees division
of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU).
The agreement must also be approved by members of the LCBO Board, and by
the Government of Ontario.
Ontario workers overwhelmingly voted in favour of a strike last week,
rejecting the LCBO's latest offer and setting the stage for walkouts as
early as 12:01 a.m. on Thursday.
The major stumbling blocks to a deal were threats of privatization that
could mean fewer union jobs and potential lower starting wages for
employees, the Ontario Public Service Employees Union had said.
The looming strike deadline sent many Ontarians, especially restaurant
and bar owners, rushing to stores to stock up. The result was long
lineups and empty shelves this week at many stores across the province.
LCBO spokeswoman Danièle Gauvin would speak only broadly on the
agreement but said that, in terms of job protection, the focus was on
the area that were “of most concern” to the union.
“Certainly, [Finance Minister Greg Sorbara's] comments last week were
very helpful,” Ms. Gauvin said, referring to Mr. Sorbara's indications
that the government would not privatize the LCBO.

So, like, what is an alchohol emergency that they'd need to stockpile
for? ^_^

LCBO reaches tentative deal
I couldn't get my head around the thing with alcohol when I was in
Toronto. You can't even get a bottle of wine unless you went to one of
those lousy Beer Store / LCBO outlets.
Montreal was slightly better since it sold in supermarkets but the price
of stuff was just depressing.
And I thought Ireland was bad!
