The FAA and airlines weren't thrilled to assist Chicago Tribune
aviation reporter John Schmeltzer and his colleagues with their
look at air travel woes, but they eventually decided the Trib crew
could hang out on September 11. "I think they picked it because
they thought it would be a really good day for them," says
Schmeltzer. "It was after the summer rush." The Trib put reporters
on planes and in airports around the country. Five reporters were in
FAA control towers. On September 11, storms paralyzed O'Hare and
disrupted air traffic around the country. The result for the Trib,
says the Chicago Readers Michael Miner: "An epic tale of human
misery."
