Object: Lou Dobbs got it RIGHT tonight on CNN
It 'may' appear that the United States has got itself in to another Vietnam in Iraq.
"The Party on the left, is now parting on the right." - The Who
It appears that "Mass 'American' Public Appeal" feels 'dis-illusioned' be their government on
the situation in Iraq ; The 'Locals of Iraq' are not ready to accept Democracy, and the
Musslim world (Worldwide) feel that this a threat against their own RELIGION.
Don't get me WRONG, I fully support the 'dis-assemblement' of Terrorist Camps in Afghanistan
(and now Pakistan).
But, after that, are we really allowing people to be 'themselves' ???
OR, just forcing American Democracy "Down Their Throats" !!!
(Possibly for the sake of OIL, or other 'natural' resorces.)
Just My Thoughts.

With the "peak oil" situation looming, there may be many more resource wars,
unfortunately. He who has the most oil, wins.

I would say, big-time wrong on the last bit.
He who has the most oil is the biggest target.
More accurately, "He who can get the most oil will not lose quite as soon".
Keep in mind that the OPEC nations have been lying about their
"reserves" for the past 14 years. They have been posting their original
amounts of oil, not the currently available amounts.
I believe that the world hit the peak of conventional oil in 2000.
We've been going down ever since. Keep in mind that in 1999, oil hit a
low of $10 per barrel (started and ended that day at a bit over $12).
It's now over $65. A year ago it was about $30-35.
I expect that in the end of spring of 2006, oil will hit $100 per
barrel. Six months to a year after that, the price will continually
skyrocket. Doubling every 3 years or less. This will likely force
governments to slash taxes on gasoline, just to try to slow down the
price increases. We are currently at the end of the downward slope, and
about to hit the crash.
Get your debts paid off as soon as you can. If you don't own a house,
start saving to buy one after the housing crash. One out in the
country, with an acre or two for a garden, and a couple acres of trees
would be perfect. Grow food, get wood for heating. Just need a Smart
car to get to your job... for as long as that lasts.

I should have phrased it "He who has control of the most oil, wins". But
then, as you say, it does make him a target...

We have most of that...house will be paid off in two years. We're out in
the country, supplement our heat with wood and have a large veg garden and
fruit trees. Several investments, which may or may not end up worthless.
Could easily add a few chickens and rabbits if necessary. Good neighbors
that help each other out with big projects; would certainly be able to get
together in a crisis.
As for the job....yikes...we both (and most of our neighbors) work for GM.
Unless we start actually building smart cars in Oshawa, the jobs will be
gone (although we are all high senority, so we'll be the ones to ride it out
the longest). I try to be more optomistic than you are, but I have read so
much about "peak oil" that I do worry. The scariest thing is that it is
former oil patch geologists sounding the alarm, not the usual tree-huggers.
