CHICAGO (Reuters) - Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, 73, has =
suffered new health problems relating to earlier diagnosed prostate =
cancer and has canceled all engagements, he said in a letter published =
on the Web site of his church.
"I have been suffering from the after-effects of an extremely high dose =
of radiated seed implantation that indeed killed the cancer cells that =
had broken the prostate capsule, but over time, these seeds have done =
severe internal damage," he said in the letter dated September 11 and =
published online at http://www.noi.org.
"I am more than fortunate. I am blessed by Allah to be alive," he added.
Farrakhan, who once called Judaism a "gutter religion" and later said =
his comments were simply misinterpreted street talk, was a driving force =
behind the 1995 million-man march on Washington.
During a recent rip to Cuba, he said in the letter, doctors discovered =
an anal ulcer "similar to the ulcer that I had in 1998-1999 that almost =
caused the loss of my life."
He is being treated for "serious infection and inflammation," and has =
lost weight, he added.
Farrakhan said he was indefinitely postponing all engagements, meetings =
and appointments to concentrate on his health and wants the church =
leadership to run things.
In the meantime he urged his followers to prove to the world that his =
church is "ready to move beyond personality to live and function on the =
principles that make personalities attractive."
"I do not believe that my earthly work is done," he added.
