Man stabbed repeatedly at store lot

FALLBROOK ---- A young man was injured over the weekend when suspected
gang members repeatedly stabbed him as he waited for friends in the
parking lot of a Fallbrook convenience market, sheriff's deputies said
Monday.
The 19-year-old victim, who isn't believed to be a gang member, was
treated at an area hospital for eight wounds after the Saturday night
stabbing at 1005 E. Mission Road, said detective Sgt. Rich Hendrickson
of the Fallbrook Sheriff's Substation. He said the victim was released
later that night.
No one was in custody by Monday evening as a sheriff's street gang
detective continued the investigation.
"There's some tension between blacks and Hispanics right now,"
Hendrickson said. "There has been some increased gang activity."
Sheriff's deputies have been chasing rumors about potential violence
for about three weeks, since a suspected gang-related brawl at an April
30 party in Fallbrook. The brawl involved Oceanside and Fallbrook gang
members, Hendrickson said.
A 16-year-old boy was stabbed twice in the face and an 18-year-old man
was struck in the head with a beer bottle during the melee, deputies
said.
Since then there has been increased gang-related graffiti in the
Fallbrook-Bonsall community and rumors of potential violence at
Fallbrook Union High School, Hendrickson said. Hundreds of students
stayed home May 17 because of the rumors.
None of the rumors have been substantiated and there has been no
violence at the school, authorities have repeatedly said.
"We were down there this morning kind of driving around, just to make
sure," sheriff's Sgt. John Minardi said Monday.
In the Saturday night stabbing incident the 19-year-old victim, who is
black, and two friends, one white and one Latino, drove to the Circle K
about 10 p.m., Hendrickson said.
One friend went into the store to buy something while the other one
waited in the car, said the sergeant. The victim stood by the car.
About a half dozen young Latino men were sitting outside the store,
Hendrickson said.
One of the Latino men walked over to the victim.
"He said, 'What's up, fool?'" Hendrickson said. "Pulled a knife out of
his pocket."
The assailant punctured a tire on the car, then started fighting the
victim, the sergeant said. He said the other Latino men joined the
fight and two more carloads of Latinos piled on after someone whistled
for them.
Three of the victim's front teeth were pushed in as he was repeatedly
stabbed, Hendrickson said. He said people in the area began yelling at
the attackers.
"They all got in their cars and left," the sergeant said.
