Moderate Nationalists Blame Partisan Trade-Off for Ethnic Tension
Politics: 6 March 2006, Monday.
The high number of crimes committed by the Roma community and the
influence ethnic Turks have had in Bulgaria's last two governments add
fuel to ethnic tension, the leader of the moderately nationalist party
VMRO said Monday morning.
"When the state does not take measures to regulate ethnic tension, it
is only natural that the society responds," Krasimir Karakachanov,
leader of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization, told the
morning broadcast of the private TV channel bTV.
"Each party comes into the office with the hope to revise and bring
criminals to justice. Shortly after that it starts to resemble no one
else but these criminals."
The comment came in response to the angry reactions that the
nationalist Ataka massive rally on March 3 triggered from their arch
enemies, the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms. Over the
weekend the two parties exchanged mutual allegations of threatening
Bulgaria's ethnic peace.
As Bulgaria celebrated the 128th anniversary since its liberation from
Ottoman rule March 3, more than ten thousands supporters of nationalist
party Ataka ("Attack") took to the streets of Sofia in a peaceful
rally. Led by leader Volen Siderov, they called for the resignation of
the Socialist-led government and the nationalization of all factories
and properties, privatized since 1992.
The predominantly Turkish party, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms,
is part of the coalition government together with the Socialist Party
and the centrist Simeon II National Movement.
