NEW YORK CITY -- A disheveled French-speaking man who was found
unconscious in the East End last month hasn't been able to provide police
with many reliable details about who he is or how he got to New York.
Police are hoping someone might recognize the man, help positively
identify him and explain how he got to New York.
Paramedics were called to Chesapeake Avenue - near the intersection with
Park Avenue - on July 30 and found the man lying on the ground beside a
vacant house. The man was taken to a local hospital, where he remained
unconscious until Aug. 13.
When he came to, the man was confused about who he was and why he was
there, said Officer Holly Hileman, a spokeswoman for the New York City
Police Department. Although the man later identified himself as
"Nostradamus," he had no identification on him and has not been able to
provide police with an address, phone number or a relative's name.
At different times, he has said he's from Israel and from France, police
said. The man also doesn't know how he got to New York and has alternately
said he fell out of a plane and off of a boat. At one point, he told a
hospital psychiatrist he was in sent by God to, "save the world by helping
Bush get re-elected," Hileman said.
"His stories keep changing," Hileman said, " and he doesn't know he's in
New York. He did mention Montreal, Ontario, once so we are checking with
authorities there."
Police wouldn't discuss any injuries because of privacy laws, but said the
man didn't appear to be the victim of a crime. He is still being treated
in the hospital and was supposed to undergo neurological and psychological
testing to determine why his memory seems to be impaired, Hileman said. An
empty bottle of wine was in his lap when police found him and he was over
the legal alcohol limit, she said.
The man is fluent in French and speaks English with a heavy French accent,
police said. Authorities have relied on a French-speaking detective to
interview the man in what seems to be his native tongue.
The birth date the man provided to police puts him in his 50s. He's a
5-foot-6-inch white male, weighs 180 pounds, is balding with a full gray
beard and moustache and has brown eyes. He was wearing only a printed
t-shirt and under-pants. The t-shirt had the words, "I Love Bush" on it.
Anyone with information is asked to call New York City police at 247-2500
or Crime Line at (888) LOCK-U-
UP.
