MYSTERY OF THE GOLDEN FROGS
18:00 - 20 October 2005
Mystery animal researchers are launching a new project in North
Devon as they try to solve the mystery of golden frogs. According to
medieval folklore the golden frogs originate in South Devon and came to
earth when a figure, believed to be the Virgin Mary, cured a desperately
sick child.
According to the tale, the figure created a well in which golden
frogs swam to remind people of her visit.
On a visit to Bovey Tracey, Woolsery resident Jonathan Downes found
the well in question and has now set up a scheme to solve the puzzle of
the frogs.
Jonathan is the director of the Centre for Fortean Zoology and has
researched and solved animal myths for decades. According to his mum his
first word was zoo and, growing up in Hong Kong, he became fascinated by
the animals he was surrounded by which included terrapins, turtles and
even cobras.
Previously splitting his time between Exeter and America, Jonathan
recently returned to his family home in Woolsery to care for his father.
And on his return a neighbour told him about the appearance of some
unusual frogs in his garden.
Jonathan said: "A friend of my father turned up with frogs in a
bucket. The frogs were yellowy green with different markings." The
neighbour had also photographed a golden frog and Jonathan was astonished.
Until recently it was thought there was only one species of frog in
the UK, but now things seem set to change and Jonathan added: "Now the
whole identification of frog species in the UK is unknown. People are
saying there may be up to 17 species."
As a result of the findings, the team are now hoping people who have
spotted any other unusual frogs to get in touch.
Eventually they want to collate the information, and photographs
sent in, to produce an atlas of the different types of frogs found across
the country to establish the regional variations.
The team has also been joined by keen amateur photographer David
Phillips, 13, who works with Jonathan and his team each weekend and is
helping collate the pictures.
He said: "It's very exciting. We already have one picture of a
golden frog which was taken in my home village of Woolsery."
