New 'Education' Secretary Denounces PBS For Cartoon with Lesbians |
Another one of President Bush's new cabinet members is already making
headlines. On her second day in office, Education Secretary Margaret
Spellings denounced PBS for using public money to create a cartoon
episode that includes lesbian characters.
In one of her first acts as Education Secretary, Spellings wrote a
letter to PBS complaining "Many parents would not want their young
children exposed to the lifestyles portrayed." The show generating
controversy is called "Postcards from Buster." In a still not-yet-aired
segment, one episode features the title character Buster traveling to
Vermont. While the episodes focuses mostly on Vermont's farm life and
maple sugar industry, the show's main character does come across two
lesbian couples living in the state. In her letter, Spellings suggested
PBS return any federal funding used to produce the program.
Later that same day PBS announced it would not distribute the
controversial episode to its 349 stations. PBS said the objections from
the Education Department were not a factor in the decision. The PBS
station that produced the show, WGBH in Boston, plans to air the program
on March 23 and will make the show available to other stations.

Maybe if they showed the lesbians couples being harassed, intimated and
threatened for pursuing such a lifestyle, the Reich Education Minstry
might reconsider funding. They could use the cartoon then to warn kids
that being different isn't OK in a Neo-Con World.

The conspiracy is going great ... I've been busy getting ready to move
from the city to a quaint little town just outside of it ( 30 min drive
). Since I'm guilty of supporting terrorist attacks I figured I'd rather
not like to be around when it happens. Plus the new place has an above
ground pool and a 50'x220' lot to boot ... lots of room to put in a
garden and a fallout shelter.

We finalized all the offers and paperwork just before Xmas. Xmas was
nuts as usual, the wifey had a plate removed from her leg in early
January ( plate went in because of a nasty break earlier in the year )
plus she's on blood thinners to deal with some nasty clots that formed
after the original break. It's been pretty stressful and add on top of
it all that I haven't had a f***in' cigarette in 5 months 1 week. I've
managed all of this without the killer weed ... it's just that I'm
looking forward so much to this move that the stress factor is pretty
much cancelled out. It's all good ...

Marvin,
Don't you think it is up to the parents to teach their kids about
alternative lifestyles and not PBS?
My kids have long since outgrown the types of shows on PBS but they were
between the ages of 3 and 6 when they did watch Barney, Franklin the
Turtle and Big Comfy Couch. That is just too young to comprehend certain
issues IMO. It just won't even click with them if you present them with
the two mommy household, of course they won't think anything about it at
that age. Why should they? Just shut up and pass them the paste so they
can eat it! (joke...don't call out CPS on me.)
Oh yeah.....have you heard the news?
SPONGE BOB is GAY! :-O
It won't be long now before BARNEY comes out....of the cave. (I always
suspected.) ;)

I know you didn't ask me, but I would say definitely! Parents love
their children, and know them on a personal, individual basis (meaning
they know how well they comprehend things, their attention span, what
they do and do and do not understand - their maturity level, what
they're ready for and what they aren't etc..) Every child is
different, and PBS is just randomly speaking to a general audience;
I believe each child should be talked to *individually* because of the
reasons I mentioned above.

HI EVERYONE!!! <Marv waves wildly about>
I agree with you in that sense. But, sooner or later it will be
introduced to them. Going along with your thoughts, I'd rather it be
introduced with a sense of tolerance then not.
To me it's six of one, half a dozen of the other. I'd rather have the
PBS show introduce my kids to this concept then 'Uncle Tony's Redneck
Funhouse' ...

OTOH, given that most kids learn the "bad" stuff on the bus and
playground, it's better for them to get something from the teachers before
they get it from the older kids. Ideally, a parent wouldn't need to worry
about someone else jumping the gun on them, but that's never the way it
ends up, unfortunately. :-(

The trick is to teach tolerance before the older kids teach them
intolerance. I don't really see where it's necessary to
provide any kind of details about different lifestyles in a school
curriculm in order to teach tolerance, myself. Now, if the teacher/school
runs into a situation where something or other is brought up in the
classroom, then they'd have to nip that in the bud (again, regardless of
the type of intolerance, and probably with no need to provide details).
