Nigerian police clash with protesters
ISN SECURITY WATCH (Monday, 5 December: 15.57 CET) - Nigerian police
have clashed with pro-independence ethnic Igbo activists ahead of their
leader's treason trial after millions boycotted work in the
southeastern city of Onistsha.
Riot police responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the
protesters, who set up burning barricades I the city.
The banned Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of
Biafra (Massob), led by Ralph Uwazurike - who was to appear in court on
Monday along with six others - organized the protest.
The Igbos fought a three-year civil war to break away from Nigeria. The
war ended in 1970.
