Police used hobble device on 'violent' Carey
Miki Perkins
January 30, 2008 - 10:12AM
A Miami police incident report reveals Wayne Carey was so aggressive
towards officers that police were forced to place him in a "hobble" -
a leg restraint used to restrain violent and high-risk offenders.
The report describes the former AFL star as "angry, drunk, and
violent" and his speech as rapid.
In the report, arresting officer Daniel Rodriguez said Kate Neilson
told police when they arrived that her boyfriend of two years had
smashed a wine glass on her mouth, causing lacerations to her mouth
and neck.
Police went upstairs to the couple's hotel room and knocked several
times on the door, but Carey didn't answer.
When hotel security opened the door, Carey was asleep on the bed and
did not wake until police tapped him on the shoulder, the incident
report stated.
"At this point he became aggressive, jumped out of bed and became
confrontational towards these officers," Officer Rodriguez said.
After a scuffle Carey fell back on the bed and kicked Officer
Rodriguez in the mouth.
When police attempted to restrain Carey, he elbowed a second officer
in the face.
Carey was turned on his stomach and put into handcuffs, but as he was
hauled away continued to push the second officer, using his shoulders
and side.
When he was put inside the patrol vehicle, he bashed his head against
the plexiglass of the divider separating him from the officers.
Police were forced to place him in a "hobble", described by a Miami
police spokeswoman as a leg restraint used to restrain "combative,
violent, high-risk people".
It restrains a person's ankles, knees or elbows in order to prevent
the subject from striking or kicking, the spokeswoman said.

Carey 'unlikely' to face US justice
Matthew Burgess
January 30, 2008 - 1:58PM
Former AFL star Wayne Carey is unlikely to be extradited to the US if
he fails to appear in court on felony charges, a Miami-based lawyer
says.
Frederick Robbins, a criminal defence attorney with more than 30
years' experience, said people were rarely extradited in state cases.
Carey, who played 271 AFL games with the Kangaroos and Adelaide Crows,
is facing felony charges in Florida after allegedly attacking his
girlfriend in their luxury hotel and assaulting police in the US last
year.
He has been charged with assaulting a public servant, resisting an
officer with violence and aggravated battery over the October 27
incident.
He is due to face the Miami-Dade County Court on February 15. He faces
up to 15 years' jail.
Carey was also subdued with capsicum spray and arrested after a
domestic dispute at his Port Melbourne apartment at the weekend.
Mr Robbins, who is not involved in Carey's case, said that while the
US charges were serious, he believed Carey would not be extradited if
he failed to appear in court next month.
"It (extradition) is very rare when they extradite someone to state
court," Mr Robbins said.
"Most of the extradition cases are the federal cases, but this is a
state case."
Earlier today, Miami police spokesman Lieutenant Bill Schwartz told
The Age it was not known whether Carey intended appearing in court, or
what action the court would take if he failed to appear.
"He could be doing some serious time if he is extradited and
convicted. You never know what the courts are going to do," he said.
The Nine Network this morning announced it had sacked the former
footballer, a day after it was revealed his contract with 3AW radio
would not be renewed.
