As much as I feel that the "N-word" of the pre-70s was a
'demeaning' (and derogatory) term used to dehumanize African Slaves
(in North America):
This terminology (as well as the terminology used to 'single out'
other Ethnic groups) has taken on a whole new meaning after 1971.
North American's started to see the use of Ethnic "name calling"
as both a way to 'separate' people from different Ethnic
Backgrounds as being - different from their OWN - but also a way to
show 'Acceptance' (and understanding) to their cultural
differences.
At what point in North American History did the Denial of
'Celebrating Your Heritage' become "Politically In-Correct" ???
Maybe it just a Canadian "Thing", but I have (and had) many friends
that WE have called (each other) by many names - with full RESPECT :
[ Spic, Whop, Wasp, Mic, Leb, Tight ***** (a white European thing),
Uppity (N-word), Rice Bowl & Slant Eyes (personally, I never liked
either of these), Island Boy, Pollock, etc ...]
In Reality, we 'Wore' these NAMES as a "Badge Of Honour". ( It
represented our respect for our Birth Right, and our Acceptance as
being DIFFERENT. )
But, more importantly, our ACCEPTANCE by other people (of other
cultures) to a SHARED "Belief in Humanity" (and what is RIGHT) !!!

much of a group of RACISTs that we all were back then (even though we
denied it). ]
After posting the Original INSIGHT, I have come to realize how RACIST
myself (and my friends) really were back in the 70's
It appears too me now, that what we were really trying to do, was
'protect' our own "Ethnic Identity" at all costs. - even if it meant
degrading our friend's ethnic identity.
- I see this NOW !!!
Although we may have been on the 'threshold' of breaking thorough that
Ethnical barrier that we had grown up with (back then) ; in hind sight,
we were still "Ethnically Sgregated RACISTs" (in our attempts at
'preserving' of our forefather's traditions and views).
This thread has been an Eye-Opener to myself (and hopefully everyone
else that reads it).
[At least for those that lived through that era of the 70s in North
America. ]
