Broward officials blame U.S. Postal Service over missing ballots
=A0
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Broward County officials blamed the U.S. Postal
Service Tuesday for misplacing nearly half of the absentee ballots
requested in the county, as frustrated voters trying to find out what
happened overwhelmed phone lines at the elections office.
The Postal Service denied responsibility for the missing ballots, but
Broward officials said they sent about 58,000 ballots more than two
weeks ago, on Oct. 7-8. As of Tuesday, 126,220 absentee ballots had been
requested.
"That is something beyond our control," Deputy Supervisor of Elections
Gisela Salas told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "We really have no
idea what's going on.
It's just taken an extraordinary amount of time. I would really
encourage people to use early voting."
"We have employees that we assign to handle the absentee ballots that
come in," said Enola C. Rice, spokeswoman for the Postal Service's South
Florida District.
"So all the absentee ballots that are received by the postal service are
processed and delivered immediately."
Rice said most local mail is delivered in one day.
Broward County commissioners were eager to avoid another faulty election
like the one in 2000 and offered to send county workers to answer phones
or speed up lines at early voting sites. Those living out of town can
call and request another ballot, which officials said would be sent
through overnight mail.
But just six days away from the general election, elections supervisor
Brenda Snipes' office has fielded hundreds of complaints from people
about missing absentee ballots. Other residents only got busy signals.
Salas said the elections office had 158 phone lines for a county with
about 1 million registered voters, compared to Miami-Dade County's 400
lines for a similar number of voters. She said it was probably too late
to add more before Nov. 2.
"My phone mail is constantly full. I clear my voice mails twice a day
and I have 30 each time," she said.
Long lines have still been a problem at many early voting sites in
Broward, with some voters waiting about 2 1/2 hours to cast their
ballots. As of Tuesday, 67,249 people had voted early, Salas said.
Pete Corwin, assistant to County Administrator Roger Desjarlais, said
the problem was not caused by a lack of voting machines, but rather a
lack of laptop computers and poll workers to process the voters.

Box with 179 voter registration forms found after deadline
=A0
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A former employee of a voter-registration group
turned in a box Tuesday with 179 voter registration forms that were
filled out in the Miami area this summer.
Mac William Stuart, a convicted felon and fired employee of the
voter-registration group ACORN, gave the forms to attorney Stuart
Rosenfeldt. The deadline to register to vote in the general election was
Oct. 4.
ACORN's voter drive is the subject of a statewide investigation by the
Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The group has been accused of
mishandling voter registration in its national campaign to get low- and
moderate-income and minority voters registered.
Stuart said a friend at the Miami ACORN office gave him the box. It
contained 179 voter registration forms from July and August, nearly all
from blacks and Hispanics. Seventy-four signed up as Republicans, 78 as
Democrats and 27 unaffiliated.
Miami ACORN official Brian Kettenring said Stuart had been fired for
breaking laws against paying people for signing up voters. He blamed
Stuart for the forms.
"We have no idea who produced those voter registration cards,"
Kettenring told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "But what we do know is
Mac Stuart has them, Mac Stuart was fired by us for breaking the law,
and Mac Stuart is a convicted felon."
Stuart has been convicted of larceny, robbery, and cocaine possession,
according to state records.

Pinellas officials send nearly 300 incomplete absentee ballots
=A0
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Nearly 300 voters in St. Petersburg received absentee
ballots that were missing the second of two pages, Pinellas County
elections officials acknowledged.
County Elections Supervisor Deborah Clark promised Tuesday to correct
the error by the Nov. 2 general election. Her office has mailed the
inadvertently omitted page to the 293 affected voters, along with an
explanation and a postage-paid envelope.
"If necessary, we'll be going around picking up ballots this weekend,"
she said. "Whatever we can do to get all of those pages by 7 p.m.
Election Day, we will do."
Clark said she learned of the problem from someone who e-mailed her
office. A team that assembled absentee ballot kits mistakenly was given
only the first page of the ballot, she said.
"It was an oversight on our part," Clark said.
The missing page lists five referendum questions concerning the city's
downtown waterfront.
Lori Hudson, a deputy administrator for Clark, said 89,130 Pinellas
voters had requested absentee ballots as of Tuesday, and 44,678 had been
returned.

At this point there are probably more lawsuits that have been filed
then actual missing ballots.
BTW? What ever happened to those 1,000,000 disenfranchised black
voters in Florida who the Democrat party said had fire and garden
hoses turned upon them and dogs sent after them at the voting polls? I
never got to see any pictures or evidence. I would appreciate it if
you would direct me to some website with this photo and personal
people's names info for history?
thanks ;)
