You don't know too much about dialysis machines, do you. Even the
spelling eludes you.
Now be a good boy and look up all about them, their sizes and needs. Do
pay correct attention to the home dialysis system widely available too

I don't know what a 'shoe in for the job' means. It must be some
American saying. It sounds derogatory, and I will therefore oppose it.

Actually, it isn't derogatory, in and of itself. It means practically
guaranteed. (We use that expression in Canada, too).

In fact, Jane would have my vote for common sense any day of the week.

Ahhh, thanks Jane. It then has a similar meaning to the English saying,
'Having one foot in the door'.
Not to labour their respective merits, but the imagery produced by the
English example appears to be rather preferable to The US version. I
understand now.

You would be a shoe in for the job
'Having one foot in the door'.

I've heard that saying before. I think the spelling might be wrong. I
thought the word was 'shoo' as in 'get lost', 'scram', 'beat it' or 'hustle').
The statement gives the impression of someone hustling here through the door
as opposed to just 'having a foot in it'. It has a way stronger meaning.
Hope that helps..

It does, Mondo. This is transatlantic co-operation at it's best! Thanks

We used to have a similar saying "you're in like Flynn", a
reference to the film star Errol Flynn of some 70 years ago.
He apparently had a way with women. The saying isn't used much
these days... hardly anyone has heard of Errol Flynn.

I had forgotten but, yes, I seem to remember that one, albeit

At school, (many years ago) Errol Flynn was the subject of...well,

That may be the root cause of popularity with the ladies?

He (Errol) did have a way with women, but nothing like WC Fields and
Barrymore who seemed to spend as much time at "the Cathouse" as at the
bar though Flynnie was known for a sense of humour, the myth was that

We have that expression here, as well. It means that you have a better
chance than some others, but not necessarily a guarantee, like shoo-in
implies. If you're a shoo-in, you have to really screw up very badly to
not get the job - it implies that you are extremely qualified, capable,
and have an excellent professional reputation. If you have a foot in the
door, you've made a first step in getting the job you want to get.
A shoo-in: you've worked at the company, have consistently outperformed
all of your peers, went to school part-time to complete an advanced degree
in your field, are always willing to "go the extra mile" to make sure
things get done on time and under budget, get along well with everyone,
behave and dress in a professional manner. You've conducted training in
your area, been keynote speaker at conferences, have been published in
professional journals - none of which has impacted your productivity. The
only way you're NOT going to get the job is if God Himself applies, or you
completely and totally screw up the interview.
A foot in the door: you've just managed to get an entry level management
job in the company you want to become a high level manager at.

Woodswun knowingly explained;
"We have that expression here, as well.,,,"
Thanks Woodsy. A very full comparative definition. I can forget
footwear now and concentrate on hurrying animals along etc!
That one (shoo) is 100% transatlantic, we have nothing to compare with
it. I suppose we would just say 'a certainity' in discussing the given
circumstances of your example.
Knowledge is always good, but you are right in your second post. I have
more interest in defending a friend, than I do in etymolological
matters. Well, in this case that's true, anyway.:)

I didn't see Ricky's original post. The correct spelling would be

various aspects of the English language, although I'm not quite sure about

Look Ricky you know by definition you are not playing with "rocket
scientists" here but "rocket polishers" trouble is they go off in the
silos!
How many of them even finished primary school?
All they can do is be disparaging and courtesy to them is something
females do before royalty!
Easy to BAG hard to swallow
Then again did not Binnie get a transplant or is it just a myth about
his kidney, he is also supposed to have Marfan's disease, we do not
really know, though according Nostie he is going to Big and will lead
the west into the biggest trap in History, though on the surface Saddam
seems to have done just that!

Heya Leigh. Number noted! I will. I wondered if you were still in the
Uk and how you were finding things to be.
Grins Leigh, about the 'rocket polishers' that is. This one just dogs
my posts. He hates my ignoring him! I shouldn't really, because he is a
very 'gifted' rocket polisher. He is in constant communication with
Nosty and can ask him questions for you. Mind, there is a 'donation'
involved!
That story about Osama's need for dialysis. It sounds probably true
enough, but who knows in these days of information and propaganda!
I can't really see a person as organised as he appears to be, with
large sums of money available, finding a transplant to be a problem.
Hell, he manages to persuade people to blow themselves into small
pieces 'for the cause', I'm certain he could acquire a spare kidney.
I'll....talk....soon :)

MUCH LIKE CNN's "Bin Laden" expose - you have the VILLAIN totally wrong

The 'attack' in Spain has been attributed to (and confirmed by) a
SELECT group from the North Western Region of Africa.
Get your FACTS RIGHT (and that applies to Ms. Anampour of CNN as well).
