Brazil 2-0 Australia
Posted By Matt On 19th June 2006 @ 10:35 In Group F | 33 Comments
Apologies for the delayed post. After the game last night I went to bed
at 4.30am. Slept for 3 hours. Got up at 7.30am. Sat university exams
all day, and now I am home and buggered. Hooroo.
Last night we saw Australia lose to an underperforming and at times
vulnerable looking Brazil side. Taking nothing away from Brazil, they
won the game, but they didn=E2=80=99t look like the Brazilian team that most
of us know, and are capable of being. Australia played really well, we
created some good chances, defended well, and at the end of the day we
were beaten by the no.1 side in the world.
Brazil=E2=80=99s class was what got the better of us in the end, and the
Australian should be congratulated on their performance.
The first 15 minutes was crucial and if we had conceeded then the game
would have been won already. We survived a number of attacks and even
made a few of our own. We had a good first half and I am sure the boys
were confident going into half time at 0-0.
Adriano scored a decent goal, and even though I thought we would start
to crumble, we countered them well and had some good shots on goal and
near misses. Hiddink used the same tactics as he used against Japan, by
putting our attacking men on in the second half and we definitely
looked capable of pulling one back. However, we were playing Brazil not
Solomon Islands and they managed to keep us out. Brazil did look
vulnerable at the back at times, and against an Argentina or Holland
they would have conceded. A 1-0 result was looking on the cards and
this would have been a great result, but we were unlucky enough to go
2-0 down in the dying minutes. By committing so many men forward to get
the equaliser, we were exposed at the back and this is what let Brazil
in.
We definitely put in a gallant performance and gave Brazil numerous
headaches. If they don=E2=80=99t pick up their game I can=E2=80=99t see them
winning the World Cup. Credit to our boys though, we gave it our best
shot and we gave them a run for their money. We played as a team and we
looked dangerous on a number of occasions. Our defence held up well,
and full credit to them.
Is it just me or was the ref blowing his whistle at just about anything
Australia did to Brazil?
Possibly the most pleasing aspect of the night, is that Croatia drew
with Japan, meaning we only need a draw against Croatia to go through
to the next round. After last nights performance, the Round of 16 is in
our own hands.

Ah. It's good to have someone who thinks the same Ron. One of the
problems with (shudder) football, is that one feels a social outcast to
admit loathing the 'sport'.
All that cheering and flag-waving over a ball kicked now and then! I
doubt there would be any similar frenzy of excitement were alien
spaceships to land. The world in general would be watching 'the match'
on television...too absorbed to bother about such things!

No kidding. About the only news I've heard is some American
fans/spectators fighting with some Germans over losing a game
in Germany.
The World Cup is like a non-event over here. I did enjoy watching
the last game of the Stanley Cup between the Carolina Hurricanes (US)
and Edmonton Oilers (Canada). Those guys were beating the crap out of
each other. Really agressive hockey is fun to watch sometimes.

Hockey is, of course, the best team sport to watch (I'm biased,
naturally) and the roughness is a big part of that. It actually used
to be a lot rougher than it is now. They've tightened up the rules
over the years...don't see the bench-clearing brawls much anymore.

That's a shame. Some years ago I bought 68 hours of videos with, YES,
NHL fights. Domi and Ray of the Sabres were my absolute favourites. Back
to the old time hockey! (NIce dream)

I don't think you're biased in this at all, Jane. Hockey is the only
sport, besides possibly basketball, where the action is continuous.
Plus, it's extremely difficult to score a goal, and it takes a lot of
attention to keep track of the puck *and* the action elsewhere on the
ice.
Pro hockey hasn't been the same since they got rid of the American
League and merged the 2. College hockey is more intense and the players
give a lot more into the game.
IMHO, of course! :-)

I agree with you. That is why we prefer junior hockey (the non-college
level before the NHL), as well as college and international
competition. In junior/college, they are trying to make the pros, so
they do indeed give a lot more to the game. Plus, we can go see a
junior game live, with excellent seats, for about $15 each.

fans in Germany!
No, some 300 English 'fans' were arrested following a mass brawl with
German 'fans' on Saturday.
That's one of the things I hate about the 'game'. Mindless violence is
of more importance to a huge number of 'followers', than are the games
themselves.
The average football 'fan' has an IQ of about 10, reads 'The Sun'
newspaper, is inumerate and inarticulate. He drinks huge amounts of
beer to fill his enormous stomach, and usually has pretty swastika
tattoos on his face. If that doesn't help you to identify him, then his
repetitious use of obscenities will.

I didn't write that, I think it was Perseid.
Someone posted a link to a supposed "brawl", and it looked like people
were just tossing around those lightweight plastic lawn chairs, but it
didn't look like any kind of "brawl" to me. (Looked like they were doing
it in jest, some of them even tossing chairs at their own "side").
That's one of the things I hate about the 'game'. Mindless violence is

Those are probably people who go for the party, not the game. I used to
go to the Grand Prix every year, and there was a significant portion of
the people in attendance who went to see the cars and buses get burned
up, rather than see the races.
The average football 'fan' has an IQ of about 10, reads 'The Sun'
newspaper, is inumerate and inarticulate. He drinks huge amounts of beer
to fill his enormous stomach, and usually has pretty swastika tattoos on
his face. If that doesn't help you to identify him, then his repetitious
use of obscenities will.
How can you say that?!? Nobody with an IQ of 10 could breathe without
assistance. ;-)

Those are probably people who go for the party, not the game. I used to

Yep Woodsy, there are many genuine 'fans'. Sadly the game in England
suffers from a cancer. The highly organised groups of agitators who
promote violence. In football 'fans' they find excellent material.
The 'link' you saw was an odd one. The papers in Europe carried many
photos of riot Police dragging fighting 'supporters' to prison. Many
photographs of 'fans' covered in blood.
Yes, those who go to a Grand Prix hoping to see a crash are no doubt
numerous.
Fortunately, these people don't take action to cause a crash. There is
the difference.
I wonder if you missed the news where hundreds of people are killed at
various football venues through hysterical stampedes, in an effort to
escape the terrace violence?
Try any large UK town on a Saturrday afternoon, any public transport
where thousands of 'fans' barge through the public swigging their beer
and chanting mindless 'songs', and you may see these people in a
different light.
Better still...spend a few years on riot control and pass Saturdays
trying to keep these 'fans' apart from one-another, whilst a hard-core
element provokes one major riot after another.
It's a cult, Woodsy, a dangerous cult. I like certain sports, but enjoy
the games and smile with a certain inward satisfacton should 'my side'
win. In football, the followers show delirium, madness and ecstatic
behaviour, way beyond anything a sport should produce. Their faces
contort with what I can only describe as madness, their obscene
behaviour, total lack of concern for anybody or anything is reminiscent
of the worst cult behaviour imaginable.
Thousands and thousands of people have died, murdered as a result of
this 'game'.
No...nothing whatever to do with playing around with a lawn chair.

Yup, sure did miss that. I always skip the sports section/news. Just not
interested ... well, except for maybe to find out who won the Stanley Cup
(Yay, Whalers!!) or the World Series.

Wow, that's just incredible!! If I go to a game, I like to see a game

the game's the thing ... if you'll pardon a Yank from paraphrasing The

Perhaps I did misunderstand, but it wouldn't surprise me if
300 americans, 300 english, and 300 germans were all brawling
outside the stadium. These things usually don't make our
national news unless americans are involved.

if it's any consolation, Ricky, I occasionally purchase a copy of "The
Times" compact (Saturday) edition -- if there's a big news story such
as a major terrorist attack or natural disaster -- they become
collector items....
But don't receive it here in Oz until the following Wednesday (four
days later) & it costs a
whopping $13 here -- but well worth the read -- & I usually keep them
in a A3 Folio -- for posterity of-course !!
BTW, In Melbourne we have the same sort of mindless right-wing
sycophantic drivel as
"The Sun"....It's called the "Herald-Sun" an appalling subservient
Neoconservative rag of a paper -- one of Rupert baby's stable.....

No kidding. About the only news I've heard is some American
fans/spectators fighting with some Germans over losing a game

Must have mis-read that one Woodsy. I doubt if there are any American
fans in Germany!
No, some 300 English 'fans' were arrested following a mass brawl with
German 'fans' on Saturday.
That's one of the things I hate about the 'game'. Mindless violence is
of more importance to a huge number of 'followers', than are the games
themselves.

Probably depends on what part of the country one lives in. In my part

native countries (or, if they're native here, they're cheering on the

Very true Jane. Here, the flag of St George is draped from windows,
cars, everwhere that a flag, or some piece of white cloth with a red
upright cross, can hang is used. Not one flag of any other Nation.
It is the only time when anyone in England waves the English flag or
says they are 'English'. Take football away, and everyone is 'British'
and waves Union Jacks.

Lots of kids here (including my son) play soccer, but it is not
normally a big spectator sport here, either, except every four years
and mainly in the ethnic enclaves ("Little Italy", "little Portugal",
"Little Korea", etc). I see people at work with t-shirts supporting
their teams. My son watches some of it; my husband started watching a
game, but got bored, :). At the Montreal Olympics, I attended a game
between Israel and Mexico and found it a big yawn. I think that is the
only soccer game I've ever watched that my son wasn't playing in!
Soccer for kids is reasonably poriced and great exercise.

Hockey is, of course, the biggest here. There are also lots of fans of
football (especially NFL and US College) and baseball. Some like
basketball, but it is not as big here. I was a hockey fanatic as a
teenager; I still like it, but prefer Jr. hockey or international
competition to the NHL. The NHL is not what it once was. At the Jr
level, they are still playing for something. The NHL has too many
teams and too long a season. Football and baseball bore me to tears...
