It became popular from about 1975 onwards..replaced the less
inflammatory word, 'Copper'.
I should have added that only the opponents of the Police, the criminal
fraternity use it.

We used to have the term "Copper", too. At least, they used it in old
movies ...

Sadly, the halo above the UK Police has slipped. There is not the best
of relationships between Police and public these days. Oddly enough, I
found your US Police more easy going and friendly than are the UK
Police.

I've never run into a police officer that wasn't helpful and friendly,
but then, I've never been in their crosshairs. There are bad police
officers who abuse their position, same as in every other job that gives
people a little bit of power. (Human nature, I'm afraid).
I've never been to Britain, so I've nothing to compare to.

Actually, I don't really Woods. I'm not a film fan, and I take anything
concerning the various US Police departments depicted on television
with a very large pinch of salt.

Ah, well - an extremely simplistic overview:
We've got the FBI, which does not have a uniformed contingent. FBI
agents are required to have a college (university) degree (plus
additional FBI training). They have authority over federal crimes.
We've got State Troopers, which do have a uniformed contingent. They
are required to have a college degree, plus trooper training. Their
jurisdiction is within the state.
Local police (town/village/city). They have a uniformed contingent, and
may or may not have a plain clothes division (a small village may not
have any plain clothes officers, while NYPD and LAPD obviously do).
Some localities require all police officers to have a college education,
some do not - it depends. Their jurisdiction is within the locality
(town, village, city). They handle pretty much everything, but smaller
towns/villages without labs may have to hand off serious crimes to troopers.
Sheriff/deputies. Uniformed, the jurisdiction is the county or parish,
including towns/villages which may have local police. The Sheriff is
typically an elected position, while deputies are civil servants working
for the county government. They handle all kinds of activities, but
(again) may have to hand off some serious crimes to state police.
Typically, a person in need of emergency assistance will dial 9-1-1,
which will get you the local Emergency Services dispatcher. Depending
on the nature of the emergency, they will dispatch the nearest law
enforcement official (local, county, or state) to assist you.
State troopers, county sheriffs and local police almost all make
"rounds" in their cars, and it is not unusual to see all three pass
through a village at some point.
I believe that extremely large cities, such as NYC, do not have sheriff
departments.
Woods

The old fashioned image has long gone...a little like red telephone
boxes. Every Police Force has a headquarters. Scotland Yard is the
headquarters of the Metropolitan (London) Police.

'Bobbies' arose from an allusion to the founder of the Police
Force...Sir Robert Peel (Bobby).

The public generally call us, 'The Filth' these days.

Driving "the beat" is pretty much a thing of the past around here due to
high fuel costs. They have designated areas that they stay at until they
get a call.
We also have something new called a "Stop Station" which is a small
police office within a community, usually located in a mall and
connected to a store....such as TARGET or K-MART.
Its purpose is to better police relations within a community and as a
crime deterent. Also saves time and money by allowing the officers to
report to their sub-sector rather than having to go to the main police
building first.
Copies of police reports and background checks can be obtained at the
stop station for a small fee also.

I don't think that have to worry about "politcal correctness" like we do
here. Seems like everytime we make an arrest, an attempted arrest or
just questioning somebody there is a line of lawers ready with papers on
how we "profiled" or some other line of crap. I saw the headline London
newspaper the other day and it said in big bold letters "We got the
bastards!" I would LOVE to see a headline like that in the US!!

Ah, that really silly ideal, even the name makes little sense. A few
years ago I was wandering in Hollywood and came across a 'star making'
ceremony. Brian May was present and the pavement star was being laid
for the pop group, 'Queen'. A fair number of Police were in control of
the crowd.
I watched as a middle-aged woman screamed and whined incessantly at a
Police Officer over some small issue that he had said she couldn't do.
She was shouting about reporting him and went on..and on...and on. The
Police Officer just 'took it'. He made no reply, simply tried to ignore
her.
In contrast, I remember chasing the driver of a stolen car, a youth,
from where he abandoned it. He ran into a house nearby...it was his own
home. We followed and grabbed him when his mother appeared and started
to shout and whine in much the fashion of the Hollywood lady. She kept
saying about how she would complain....my colleague was not known for
his patience and rather shocked her by grinning...undoing his trousers,
and urinating on the carpet. He simply told her, 'Complain about that
then....They'll never believe you!'
So much for 'political correctness..;)

I was walking around a local drive-in theater last year with a police
officer who was doing the normal walkthru. He went up to a car that had
some extremely LOUD people in it and the managers had a couple people
complaining. He told them to keep it quiet or get out. Boy, did the
sparks fly! They started yelling about how it was racist and that they
were going to sue for defamation of character and all that! I couldn't
believe my ears! I was there for the whole conversation and the officer
had to take it with a smile on his face and be polite through the whole
ordeal!! I'm sooo glad I never followed in the footsteps of the rest of
the family and got into law enforcement, I wouldn't last a day without
smacking the stupid out of someone. ;)

Ugh. That would never have done for me thanks Brian. In the Uk bad
behavior is met quickly with arrest. The old Public order act 1936, S5
of 'conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace', is very useful!
Woods talked earlier about the US system of Policing. No wonder you
have to use the broader term of 'law enforcement'. There are so many
types of Police Officer over there.
In the Uk there is simply a Police Officer. He may specialise later in
his career in a wide range of investigative areas, but remains just a
Police Officer. Staying too long in any one specialist department is
not really allowed either.
It's bad enough just catching someone, without fighting over
jurisdiction issues. I can see that having so many types of Police must
be a problem. We don't have the FBI thing either. I suppose that is the
advantage of not having 'State boundaries' with differing laws therein.
No wonder the US court system is a nightmare, and a goldmine for
lawyers.

Yes, and I didn't cover them all .... we've got ATF agents, Rangers,
and a bunch of other stuff that I can't think of off the top of my head.

That's a good idea, on several levels, if you're working with witnesses
and criminals. Maybe not so good if you're doing forensics.

jurisdiction issues. I can see that having so many types of Police must

Anything across state lines goes to the federal level. Usually, the
various law enforcement agencies are pretty good about cooperating, but
once in a while the more encompassing agency takes over where the local
authorities feel they should have jurisdiction. I suspect that's
usually due to an ongoing investigation that involves multiple
jurisdictions, and there's no "need to know" that for the local police.

I think the FBI has hardware to crunch data, too. But it has also
occurred to me that Scotland Yard has a much smaller area to keep tabs
on, which greatly reduces the size of the stuff to be crunched. Also,
keep in mind that they have everyone under constant surveillance in
London. The perps are definitely on film somewhere, just need to figure
out which ones.

Hey Stinky, I was referring to the FBI's software problems ...they've
spent a shitload of money on a custom software package to help them
organize and crunch data. They just recently wrote the whole thing off
and are now going with some customized off-the-shelf software.
