Colombo, June. 15 At least 30 civilians were killed and 40 others
injured in a powerful claymore blast, which hit a passenger bus,
triggered by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri
Lanka=E2=80=99s north-central Anuradhapura district on Thursday morning, the
Army said.
We still do not know the exact number of persons killed as the bodies
are in pieces. The bus was toppled and completely damaged. The number
of fatalities could be at least between 30 and 35 innocent civilians,
including women, Prasad Samarasinghe, the military spokesperson, told
The Hindu.
The powerful claymore blast was triggered around 7.40 a.m. on Thursday.
This is the biggest civilian target by the LTTE since the signing of
the February 2002 ceasefire agreement.

COLOMBO (XFN-ASIA) - At least 58 bus passengers were killed and another
45 wounded as suspected Tamil Tiger rebels set off a powerful landmine
in northern Sri Lanka today, a government official said.
The casualties were high as the bus was overcrowded with villagers
travelling to the main town of Kebitigollewa to buy provisions, said
Keheliya Rambukwella, the government's spokesman for defence related
issues.
'This is the most barbaric terrorist act of the Tigers,' he said,
accusing the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of carrying out
the attack.
'Among the 58 dead are two Buddhist monks. There are lot of children
among the 45 wounded,' he said.
Military spokesman Prasad Samarasinghe said it was the worst attack
against civilians since a February 2002 truce went into effect.
'We have no doubt that the attack is the work of the LTTE,' he said.
'No one else would do a thing like this.'
He said the bus was hit by a Claymore mine, or a side charger, which
overturned the vehicle and sent it crashing down the road for about 25
metres. Women and children were among the victims, he said.
The attack took place in the district of Anuradhapura, 200 kilometres
north of Colombo, officials said.

Explosion on Bus in Sri Lanka Kills 62
06.15.2006, 02:47 AM
A powerful land mine ripped through a bus packed with commuters and
schoolchildren in northern Sri Lanka on Thursday, killing at least 62
people, the army said.
The army blamed the Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack, but the rebels
denied responsibility.
The explosion - described as "huge" by military spokesman Brig. Prasad
Samarasinghe - was the worst single act of violence since the
government and Tamil Tiger rebels signed a cease-fire in 2002, and
renewed fears of a return to war.
